Gizmo is at iris stage 2 and I've decided to give it a try. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it and whether it was helpful?

We used AminAvast with Elton. I can't say if it really did any good in the end, but he accepted it happily enough. Porus One, which he also had, is generally felt to be more helpful. In the end though and following Elton's death, I now think that the biggest benefit to all these supplements is to the owner, as you get to feel like you are doing something to help your cat - which is a positive thing in itself, as looking after a CKD cat can be very emotionally challenging. Hope all goes well for you and Gizmo. Sorry I should edit to add that Elton was much sicker than Gizmo so you may well have a good chance of keeping him feeling good for a considerable time - CKD progresses slowly usually. I didn't mean to sound so negative - sorry!

Thank you. I'm sorry about Alton 😢.

Tbh, I'm fully accepting that I'm probably doing this more so I can feel I tried everything, rather than it necessarily helping, but you never know...

I've been looking at the Tanya website and am currently totally overwhelmed.

Gizmo (not her name, but probably what I'd have called her if I'd had her from birth) is such an amazing kitty. She's blind from birth, hare lip, skull deformities, walks like John Wayne. She can't miow because of her hare lip so sounds like 'oh no, oh no' and she still tries to hunt despite being blind. She's even been successful a couple of times. She'll be 15 soon and whilst I know she's not immortal, I'd like another few hundred years from her in an ideal world 😉

Oh bless you - I know how you feel - it is overwhelming. The Tanya website is a bit much but very useful and her advice (look at the cat not the numbers) helped me countless times, when I was in despair over his latest results. Some of the advice, such as administering Sub Q fluids, I just couldn't follow though, which made me feel like I was failing-so as ever, you just have to take what works for you and disregard the rest.
Elton was young (3 1/2), but his card was marked due to a number of health issues. Despite these, he managed to enjoy every day. If I have one regret, it's that I didn't just relax and enjoy life with him a bit more. I was always fussing over his diet and medications. Gizmo sounds like a total star, who embraces life and that's the most important thing.

Oh and just to reiterate I would definitely consider Porus One over AminAvast. Porus One actively helps the kidneys filter out toxins whilst AminAvast is more like a supplement for general kidney health. It's more popular in the US and can be expensive to buy here Vs Porus One as well.

Thank you. Just to check, it's porous 1 a phosphate binder, or do I need one of those as well? 🥴

Apparently AminAvast and porous 1 can both be given, though I'm going to check it all through with the vet.

No Porus One isn't a Phosphate binder - it has a slightly different mechanism but you can use it alongside one - we used Epakatin. Phosphate binders are only really important though if Gizmo won't eat renal food as you sprinkle it on non renal food to reduce phosphate levels. Porus One can be taken alongside anything - including AminAvast. Be aware though that you need to wait 2 hours between administering Porus One and giving Gizmo any other meds, as it can block absorption - as we found out when the Gabapentin that Elton needed before vet visits suddenly didn't touch the sides! Please feel free to ask me anything else - I know how difficult it can be to navigate this journey on behalf of your cat and vets are often not massively clued up on treatments for CKD.
