Fleas

My friend purchased a kitten and has now gone on holiday and asked me to “pet sit” the cat in my house, very responsible I know.
The kitten has fleas, I’ve confined it to my conservatory to try not infest the house, I’ve bathed it, combed it (got under 10 out) and ordered ITCH stuff (I’m not sure I’ve never had a cat before)
I’ve got a 10 month old baby in the house I don’t want to be bitten, help me! What do I do until the delivery??
panicking! “Friend” is back in a week!!!

You take the cat to the vet that she has registered it with and you get treatment there and then, also buy a tin of Indorex and spray everywhere. Washing any / all soft furnishings.

and friend reimburses you for all the costs when she returns, or does a bank transfer.

I don’t think she’s registered with a vet! She’s not responded to my message from earlier today probably because I was annoyed and made it known 😞 do I need to indorex everywhere even though the cats been confined?
thank you

How old is the kitten ?

Surely she registered it when she brought it home - and had it checked over.

When was it micro chipped ? at the rescue / breeder ? or she took it and had it done at the Vet ?

I would get something like spot on front-line over the counter if you don't want to faff about with vets. The vet stuff is more powerful but front line will do the job at least for the duration of your sitting. Combing with a flea comb can be pretty effective too but drown the fleas in a cup of water as they are an absolute b🤬 to kill. Get the Indorex and spray your conservatory and anywhere they have been. You only need to do this once and will kill flea on contact and sterilises their eggs. You might start getting bitten after spot on as fleas try to find another host 🤢 the Indorex will take care of the environment though.

I got 50 fleas (yes I counted them and kept a tally) off a 10 week old kitten we adopted in about 2 days before we got her to the vets for treatment 🤢 then went on a rampage hoovering and Indorex'ing the house like an absolute flea obsessed mentalist. Acting fast is necessary otherwise they can quickly multiply and infest

PinkOtter · 23/05/2025 20:56

I think the kittens around 8 weeks old? She got the cat less than 3 days ago so I don’t think she’s done anything with it besides feed it?
not very clued up on cats and kittens but I’ve combed it a few more times and not got anything else out will do it again tomorrow
also will order the indorex and do that once I’ve applied the flea stuff when that arrives

poor kitty

She should have collected kitty after her holiday.

floppybit · 23/05/2025 21:23

I feel so sorry for this kitty, it’s been separated from its mum and siblings and left on its own while owner is on holiday, poor little thing 😢. It’s got nobody to play with (and fleas). Just be careful with the spot on because some of it can’t be used on kittens under a certain weight.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 23/05/2025 21:27

Poor baby. And poor you having to deal with fleas! I would say bring to a vet for flea treatment if you can afford it (and get money back) as some of the ones you order online don’t really work (and even can be dangerous). Especially when kitty is so young.

and indorex is brilliant and necessary!

PinkOtter · 24/05/2025 10:17

The kitten is being played with periodically by me & my eldest daughter so it’s honestly neglected!
I’ve combed her again this morning awaiting this treatment to arrive and the indorex
“friend” replied that “she doesn’t have fleas she checked and she’s not at the vets til I come home and register her” urgh

You need to weigh the kitten as flea treatment is done by weight and check that the flea treatment is suitable for it's age. I would go to Pets at Home rather than buying on line as they will be able to advise you and give the correct treatment.

Your friend sounds totally irresponsible.
