Hi we are in the process of adopting a cat who is currently in the UK in foster. He is originally from Dubai. He was rescued as a stray in the street and brought over to the UK.

Does anyone have a cat adopted from Dubai or overseas and how did they get on with adjusting to the UK weather as being an indoor/outdoor cat.

We were going to get a cat flap installed in a few months once the cat is home and settled so they can have access to the outdoors. We live in a safe rural area.

My Cousin brought over a cat from Dubai, to a rescue here. I know the people he was rehomed too. I don’t think there have been any issues.

Hello! This is my specialist subject. I adopted a cat from Dubai in Nov 2023. He adapted well to the temperature change for the most part - everywhere in Dubai has air-conditioning so our house was probably warmer than he was used to! However over time he actually grew a second coat and got fluffier then he would have been in Dubai. When it got really cold he also spent a lot of time hanging over the radiator. Rain and cloudy days were probably worse for him - I'm sure he used to suffer from SAD.

My Malaysian cats moved back to the UK with me some years ago and they adapted really well to living here. They enjoyed radiators in the winter but happily spent plenty of time outside as well. Their coats did seem to get fluffier over time. I was worried before moving them but they were absolutely fine. I did keep them inside for a while when they first moved and introduced them gradually to going out, with me to begin with, but that may not have been necessary. They're a little smaller than UK cats, so again I kept an eye on them at first. They held their own though!

I have two Dubai cats, both of which are allowed outdoors. They have gotten used to the UK weather easily, although one really doesn't like rain.

My boy was a street cat, so has a high level of self sufficiency and independence. He also has a habit of gulping food, worried that this meal would be his last, not trusting he was safe and would be regularly fed. He's calmed down a lot and is very loving
