How to remove cat wee smell from carpet

When my cat was unwell she peed on the carpet. I thought I'd always managed to clean it up faitly quickly but the carpet stinks of cat wee, so obviously not.

The carpet is heavily pattered and so I can't tell where the smell is. The whole area stinks.

I can't afford to replace the carpet and would prefer not to hire a carpet cleaner.

I've tried sprinkling with generous amounts of bicarb which seemed not to help at all.

Any suggestions?

Get some biological washing powder and clean area. Then spray with a mix of water and surgical spirit.

Used to work for us (our cat would get UTI's and inform me by spraying in front of my in the house).

Maybe try Mr Muscle super oxy pets urine destroyer. You need to use a lot but it does work.

Get some special stuff from the pet shop but if its gone into the underlay or the floor underneath you may not be able to get rid of it

Buy a UV black light on eBay. Under a fiver.

Shines a uv purple light and you can see pee as it shows up luminous yellow green in the darkness. You can’t miss it. Then you know where to concentrate. It’s the ones the police use to find bodily fluids, blood etc. White things and dust glow bright white but you can see they’re not pee. Totally worth it.

UV light and then Simple Solution spray.

Cat wee smell is tough because it soaks into the carpet and underlay, not just the surface. Bicarb alone won’t remove it. If you can, try a pet enzyme cleaner (made specifically for cat urine) and really soak the area so it reaches the underlay, then let it air-dry fully.

If that’s not an option, a mix of white vinegar and water (50/50) can help neutralise the smell, followed by drying and then a light sprinkle of bicarb once dry. Ventilation is key.

I know that vinegar helps with the smell of cat urine but would rather call a professional so they can suck it up from underneath and use professional odour removal products. I usually use bestlocalcarpetcleaners.co.uk

Dr Beckmann pet stain cleaner. The one with the brush on it. I had a very sicky cat and it is brilliant.
