Cat waking me up

catcatissues · 12/05/2025 04:38

Or more accurately not letting me sleep! Yesterday he woke me at 3am, 5am and 6am. Today I’m awake again
I have health issues which cause fatigue and can’t keep doing this and I have no clue what to do
he has dry food down and a timed feeder with wet food. I can’t shut him in another room as open plan one level - he will also dig at the door, destroy carpet and still wake me up
tonight he’s woken me up by pushing a door until it slammed, chewing a book and then scratching at the slammed door Confused

any ideas? Not proud but I have just yelled at him to STFU and he’s now sulking but at least it’s quiet…. Maybe it’s the heat?
he is generally a lovely cat but seems to go through phases of this and other times snores on my bed all night

Just a thought but, I heard it said that cats worry for us when we sleep the whole night because it's such a long lump of time and we don't seem able to protect ourselves during it. He perhaps also picks up on your health issues so, worries for you.

Perhaps you could give animal reiki a go. It helps to relax them. There are books on the subject.

If you can find a decent pet psychic maybe they can have a word with the little guy too. See if there's something more going on.

A vet checkup wouldn't harm either incase he's got some sort of pain.

No pain, he has had a recent check up and is a very healthy boy!
annoyingly I hadn’t even been to sleep last night - I’m a night owl anyway but had insomnia so when he started I was still lying awake

Or use the same technique for kids, tire him out before bedtime.

Could the food timer at night be waking him?

I'd be inclined to play with the cat toys with him until he's knackered himself and then feed him once. Then leave feeding until morning.

He does get up sometimes for the food and then come back to bed
will try the wand toy tonight, it’s hard because he gets hold then won’t let go, I keep telling him he has to let go to get exercise GrinGrin

Are you paying him attention when does it? My cat did this literally all of lockdown for a full year. I think it was because i was suddenly home more. Then i had to go away for a few days. I was so scared my husband would make a rug out of her, but he slept straight through it and when i got back she had kicked the habit. I think it started off nervousness, then she just realised she was getting attention. The only thing thag stopped her was not getting what she wanted. She has never done it since!!

Never had an issue with my other cats but have a pair of Maine Coons now and the male has a meow that would wake the dead. He thinks breakfast is as soon as it gets light out or 5am, whichever comes first! They both get locked downstairs overnight, which is open plan with access to outside. They are used to it and are not destructive.

Only if he’s destroying something or eating something he shouldn’t!

If you can get a wand toy that's double sided I find you can leave them with it and they'll entertain themselves as they see the other side move when they play with one and jump to it instead and vice versa.

Oh I’ll have a look! If I get the wand out he drags it to the kitchen for the most play room
if I try and use it elsewhere he just gently grabs it and walks me to the kitchen

ah ha - that's probably the problem. My boy will happily let me have a lie in if I need one but as soon as he sees my eyes open he will be making a fuss at whatever time of night

That cat's got you well trained, catcatissues, but then don't they all? Grin

Think yourself lucky you've not got one of mine, who if I sleep through and fail to let her out has a technique of inserting just one claw in my nostril ...

I tried the garden once with the wand toy and he just sat there like “no mum” and walked the wand toy back inside Confused
he’s a good boy really but he’s just prone to eating stuff he shouldn’t and will eat his way through a book if I ignore him doing it at night

Puzzled as to why he can't go out because he's a black cat.
I've got a black tom and he's always gone out.
He's getting on a bit now and prefers swatting me with his paws in the middle of the night but in his younger years he would come home in the morning looking like he'd been at a rave.

Sadly, we lost our 3 year old very dark brown recently at night. Hit by a car. Young driver just didn’t see her until too late.

catcatissues · 12/05/2025 15:39

I might try and coax him into the garden after work, if I sit out there he will sit with me so it’s some fresh air at least. It’s like having a teenager you have to prod from under the duvet

Is he allowed outside? Cats are crepuscular so it’s totally normal for them to be most active at dawn and dusk.

never knew this but explains a lot

LucyLoo1972 · 30/01/2026 02:31

my sweet kitty wakes me up with kisses if she wants something

Ted27 · 30/01/2026 08:45

@MrsSkylerWhite

Im sorry about your cat.

I never let mine go out if the front door, always the back so he had a very big run of back gardens and he seemed happy with that. In 15 years I never saw him round the front.
He died last summer and I now have 2 tuxedo cats who are just starting to go out. Girl cat is 4 and was a stray so I do feel a bit more wary of her going out in the dark and wandering further. Boy cat is 6 months and bonkers. So cat flap is being closed at night.
Its interesting - lots of cats in my street. There are a couple I see out the front regularly, and some I only ever see out the back which is very safe for a city.

capybaraforlife · 30/01/2026 08:59

I give mine half a sachet of wet food as late as I can before I head to be eg 10 pm.

I call it his dream feed 🤪

It definitely helps but mine als has dementia so there's some strange yowling as he's infused which doesn't seem to be the case with yours.

I also had some success with a calming treat crushed into the dream feed. There's some different sorts on Iherb. The active ingredient is l theanine.
