He is currently crying at the back door as he wants to go out. We have moved 4.5 hours from the house he's lived in for 12 years. We have lived here for 17 days and in the last three he's started sitting at the door and looking out. If I'm in the garden I can sometimes hear him crying but when I open the door to come back in he runs away, into the house. Today is the first day he's been crying while sat at the door and I'm in the lounge. At the front door he other cat went into the porch while I went outside and would have gone out the front if I'd let her. The vey nurse said about another 4 to 6 weeks before he can go out.

We used to keep them in for two weeks!

Two weeks here and all fine. And I really really wouldn’t worry about chickens… they can look after themselves!!

Hi everyone, thank you. Only just had chance to come back on and my cat crying at the door has prompted me. I called to him saying I know, you're okay and he's come to me and is sat on the window sill. Our home is elevated so he can look down at the houses opposite and up over to the gorgeous hills. My son is coming to stay on Friday so I'm waiting until at least then as I'll feel better if he's here. By then will be three weeks.

Chickens - I'll see what happens and will try and distract him.

The litter tray - do I put the tray in the garden? He is used to going in the flower beds and covering it at our old house but at the moment the garden is a mess and I'm taking out all the weeds and shrubs.

If he wants to go out let him. I got a rescue cat who was 4 years old and duly covered the cat flap so he couldn’t go out. However the day after getting him I became really ill and ended up in bed. I had to open my bedroom window to get some fresh air in without really thing and off he shot out of it. I lay there panicking but he came back so I unblocked the cat flap and never looked back.

We have trays in the house regardless. I can tell when the cat has toileted outside because his white socks are grey, but more often than not he will come in to use the litter tray, kick litter all over the floor, then shout at the top of his voice to tell us the floor needs swept, right now, immediately, sooner than that, slaves.

I'm amazed they immediately took to the litter trays as it's years since they used one. Once I decided to keep him in a few months ago as last time he was due at the vet he read the calendar and ran away. My son sent me a photo to show me the cat was lying in the litter tray as if it was a bed.. this time around, using them perfectly, no mess on the floor, and in a new house.
