Cat toilet seat?

Hello wise vipers of the feline leaning.

I have 3 cats. 2 kittens - 11 months old and one of 12 years old. All outdoor cats. Started with a litter tray and they seem reluctant to go outside (various reasons ranging from not liking rain and a stupid fat cat that keeps coming into our garden and spooking the older one).

So I'm looking at alternatives including a toilet seat trainer.

Have any of you used one or know if they work? Reviews on line seem mixed.

Thanks everyone for your insights and wisdom.

Cat pics for tax are attached 🥰

Beautiful cats!

I couldn't quite understand - are you considering a toilet seat trainer because they're not keen on the litter tray? If so, you might need more litter trays - usually one per cat (and one extra is recommended). Or it might be worth changing the litter - some cats prefer the softer litters to hard, clay-based litter.

Encouraging your cats to poo in the loo (or putting the solids from the litter tray down the toilet) isn't recommended in the UK because the water treatment is designed for human waste only. It doesn't kill cat parasites such as toxoplasmosis, and they can then find their way back into the drinking water. Toxoplasmosis can be very dangerous to humans, especially pregnant women and those with poor immunity.

Sorry if it wasn't clear.

They've used poo tray before and I'm trying to wean them off as 3 trays is a lot.

I've had many cats over many years and have always successfully trained them to go outside. But this lot are a challenge ;a beautiful furry purry challenge ❤️), hence looking for alternatives.

If anything you're actually down a tray as it should be 1 tray per cat plus one.

Unless your cats are young I don't think you've got a cats chance (!) of "toilet" training them.

I think some cats just prefer to toilet inside? Our girl cat would only use the tray in absolute dire straits - even in deep snow she would hold on until one of us cleared a patch and carried her out (little princess).

We adopted a little one year old boy when she was pts last year, and expected him to go outside because he had been a stray kitten. When we started letting him out he would come in to use the tray then go back out. We’ve had him just over a year now and he sometimes goes days without using the tray at all, other times will come in and go straight to use it.

Agree with pp that you actually need more trays! We have always had three (kitchen, hallway, utility). The kitchen one is the preferred option but I would hate him not to want to use a dirty tray if we were at work all day and it wasn’t cleaned immediately per his lordship’s preferences.

As said already, cat faeces should not be flushed into domestic sewerage/water treatment.

Ultimately, if you choose to have cats you have to accept you may have litter trays for as long as you have the cats.

Cat poo shouldn’t go down the toilet anyway - but also, these “trainers” go totally against their natural
instincts to bury their poo and can cause long term issues around stress and toileting because of it.

I’m a firm believer that cats should always have a safe, dry, indoor space to use the toilet - unfortunately for most of us that means putting up with litter trays in the house. Ideally it’s one tray per cat plus one extra.

doodahdayy · 12/05/2025 07:20

eurgh please don’t put cat poo down the toilet. It’s toxic

Sunshineandrainbow · 12/05/2025 07:22

Have you tried a nice soil area in the garden for them to use?

Lush cats.

ooooohnoooooo · 13/05/2025 14:37

I have a lovely garden which they all enjoy but it's crammed with plants. I mean crammed 😬

They do have a giant pot with soil in that they use and a poo tray outside too but the older one keeps going inside. On the floor. She was perfectly 'outside trained' before the kittens arrived.

If I bring a tray in for her they all use it 🙄 in fact they come inside specifically to use it 😮 little buggers.

And yes they are boooootuful and I luffs them so much ❤️🥰

It’s a good thing that they come inside to use the toilet - please don’t take that away from them.

Well thank you everyone for the feedback. I had no idea that cat poo shouldn't be flushed. I've learned something new !

Will shelve the toilet seat idea and keep on trying other outside methods. I have all summer to retrain them so hopefully will get on top of it.

I really appreciate the input from you all.
