Worried about DCat with cystitis/new pup

My 15 year old Bengal boy has just got out of the vets after needing to have a catheter to drain his blocked bladder. The vet said it was due to cystitis. I am feeling so guilty because I think it’s due to the stress of us introducing him to a new puppy 3 weeks ago. I’ve been awake half the night worrying about him. I haven’t seen him yet this morning - I think he’s in my daughter’s room and I don’t want to wake her too early but I will shortly as I’m worried that he hasn’t used the litter tray since he’s been home and might need to go back to vet.

The only other time he had cystitis was 10 years ago when we got our other cat but he was fine after some anti inflammatory meds and him and our other cat went on to become best mates. He has also had two dogs in his life - an older rescue who is no longer with us and our current dog and he was fine with both. This puppy is a bit more bouncy and full on but even though he's got his own space away from him, he seemed to want to get to know him and hang out in the same room so I thought he was fine.

Has anyone had this situation and if so, how did you resolve it?

I would have waited to get the new pup until cat has passed away

@longtoe - thanks for your comment but it’s not really helpful as I can’t turn back time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Well the puppy doesn’t arrive for 3 weeks….

MyOliveHelper · 08/05/2025 07:27

Similar has happened with a cat next door and our puppy. They had to rehome their cat.

Inastatus · 08/05/2025 07:28

@Longtoe - we got the puppy 3 weeks ago!

Are you using cystease/cystophan? That needs to be fed daily

Inastatus · 08/05/2025 07:31

@lovegoodlovegood - thanks, I haven’t tried that as it’s only just happened but will try it going forwards.

What’s relations like between you and your neighbour?

Fine. Why wouldn't it be? All we did was get ourselves a pet. It just happened that their cat didn't like living next door to a dog.

faerietales · 08/05/2025 07:45

Honestly, I would re-home the puppy.

It’s strange you can’t see that your neighbours may not view relations with you as fine given they had to re home their cat. Even if not your “fault” I’d be surprised they look fondly upon your dog and your decision to get it!

It wouldn't be reasonable for them to blame my puppy for their cats discomfort with dogs. They know we are allowed to buy a dog, as long as we keep it under control which we do. You can't dictate what pets your neighbours have!

@faerietales - I am considering this tbh.

I am not saying they blame the dog

I am saying they may not have the warmest of feelings for you given your decision to get a puppy meant they were forced to re home their cat

and it’s odd you can’t see that

But why would they blame us or feel cold towards us because we exercised our right to a puppy? I think this is saying more about you than them, but no, we are firm friends. The cat went to one of their mums

Definitely use that, it’s about £10 off Amazon for a month, the vet told me to feed it every single day
i would also look at making sure they have wet food and any dry food is urinary
(I’ve had 2 cats both prone to urine issues!)

Inastatus · 08/05/2025 08:04

@lovegoodlovegood - thanks so much.

At 15, your cat is elderly and deserves to live out his final years in peace and quiet. Get a puppy when he’s gone and you don’t have to stress anymore.
