9 month old cat lethargic

My nine month old cat has in the last couple of days become very lethargic, and is sleeping a lot. He just doesn't seem himself. He's eating and drinking, and is weeing in his tray. He normally poos outside, so as of this morning I'm keeping him in to see if he's still pooing, but nothing yet. He's going out to the garden for a few minutes, then back in to the house to sleep. He'd usually be out exploring for a few hours in the morning, and then again in the afternoon. He still wants to be stroked, but is not jumping up for cuddles like he normally would. He's always been a grazer when it comes to his food, but he definitely looks like he's lost a bit of weight recently. I've rung the vet, but there's only emergency out of hours cover today. They won't even tell me if they think its an emergency or not, so I don't know whether to take him in. Can anyone advise? Thank you so much

I don’t know Tanger but boosting for you. Hope some wiser cat wizards pop by and that your boy gets well soon.

Hope he’s feeling better.

Hope he has improved. Could he have been in a fight and have injuries or an abcess. Sounds possibly like a pain response.

Could it be the mini heatwave we had?

RentalWoesNotFun · 06/05/2025 16:39

How is the cat today OP? Did you manage to take him to the vet?

Thank you all so much for your kind responses, I really do appreciate it. We were so worried we ended up taking him to the emergency vet, who suspected lungworm. She gave him jabs to get his appetite back, and also to get his temperature down, but said we could probably wait until today to take him to our regular vet for the scans, etc.

The jabs helped a lot, and he seems much sparkier. Our regular vet isn't sure its lung worm, so rather than the scans and blood tests she has given him medicine for the next few days to help with his appetite, and we are going to see where we are on Friday.
Yes @helpfulperson, he could easily have got into a scrap- he's a rescue who originally lived with 3 others, and thinks all cats love him and want to play, so could easily overstep some social niceties! And yes @DrDisrespect, the heat could have knocked him for six as well. Its so hard when they're poorly but they can't tell you what's wrong.
