Corneal Ulceration

I adopted a lovely 12 year old cat from the Blue Cross last week. They told me she was due a second vet check before I could adopt her as she had a scratch on her eye that was being treated with antibiotics but it looked like it was healing well and that she would likely pass the vet check and be able to be rehomed.

She did pass, the vet said she had responded to her treatment and had recovered but that she would need eye drops for the rest of her life to keep the eye lubricated and stop it from recurring. They said not to administer any drops for the first month to give her a chance to settle into her new home and bond with us all.

I noticed when I brought her home that she has a very obvious abrasion on her cornea, her whole eye is misty but i wasnt sure if this was normal after having a scratch. It's been one week and her eye has flared up already and looks quite painful. She can't open it and it's weeping a lot.

I bought some lubricating eye drops and have given them to her once a day for 2 days now but I'm wondering if her treatment was finished too soon and that she actually needs more antibiotics.

I did a bit of reading on corneal ulcerations and am now worried that she's going to need operations on her eye etc which I won't get covered by insurance.

Has anyone got any experience of corneal ulcerations? I will be taking her to the vet on Tuesday to get advice from them too but I feel a bit worried as Blue Cross made it sound like not a big deal, just buy OTC eye drops and she will be fine.

My cat had reoccurring ulcers. She’s a goat faced Persian, with the most beautiful enormous eyes. We were convinced the ulcers were caused by a virus, from her bad start in life. But after seeing an opthalmologist. It’s because she slept with her eyes partially open do they were drying out. She had surgery to re shape her eyelids and it’s solved the problem. Although she’s not as pretty as she was. Her eyes did remain cloudy for a while afterwards. But the scarring had improved and you can only see it in certain lights now. She’s a different cat now her eyes are comfortable. The first photo is pre op. The second is now.

She’s not goat faced. She’s flat faced!

All of her ulcers cleared up very quickly with chloramphenicol drops.

My DM has this! She needs loads of lubrication. She doesn’t use her eyedrops nearly enough and it’s starting to affect her sight (she’s mid 90s)

indisc that buying chloramphenicol drops OTC is much cheaper than the vets. As long as you don’t tell them it’s for your cat. My nonexistent son got a lot of conjunctivitis. 😂 (The vet dispensed the exact same drops we kept in our drug fridge at work!)
