14 year old cat unwell

My lovely ginger female cat, who we got from a rescue centre 12 years ago when she was about two, is unwell. She’s currently at the vet with DH having an ultrasound.

We took her along yesterday because she stopped eating and went into hiding. She’s had issues with pancreatitis in the past so the vet thought it could be another flare. She had blood tests and gave her an anti emetic. She was no better overnight but did at last eat something this morning. Apparently the blood tests showed elevated urea levels so I guess she could have a kidney issue?

So worried about her - she’s the sweetest girl with the friendliest most placid nature of any cat I’ve ever met. Cats I had in childhood all mostly reached their expiry dates at around 13-15, so I feel concerned we’re on borrowed time with her now 🙁

Awwww it’s so sad & horrible when they get elderly.

I hope it’s something she can bounce back from. Remember you have given her a wonderful home and an amazing 10 years of love.

Sadly it’s the worst possible news - a huge kidney tumour. She’s being put to sleep this afternoon. We are all shocked and devastated. I don’t know how we will manage without her.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. She’s known so much love for the last ten years. Hold onto that.

She’s gone - it was very peaceful and we were with her at the end. Totally numb.

So sorry to hear that . I've also got a cat with cancer and is being treated pallativly at the moment .
For the past few days she's showing good signs but sadly that's just the .
medication . The vet says 1 - 2 months but at the first sign she's no longer enjoying life we will be saying goodbye .

So sorry that’s brutal x

So sorry to hear that. We had exactly the same with our lovely cat this week too - a tumour by / on his kidneys. We had him put to sleep. It's so quiet without them isn't it. And all happened so suddenly. You gave her a lovely home and life and she will know how loved she was.

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had the same experience. I’m absolutely heartbroken: it has been such a shock. Two days ago she seemed fine (although she can’t have been - the tumour must have been there for a while) and now she’s gone forever. I have been crying all day and just can’t believe I’ll never see her little face again.

It's so sad. Yes our cat also became very ill very quickly. He was 17 and we had had blood tests about 6 weeks ago because he had lost a little weight. But nothing actually showed on the tests at the time and he was doing well in himself otherwise, we just thought he was slowing down gently with age.

He stopped eating so we took him to the vet, who could feel a lump and booked him in for an ultrasound, hoping he could have palliative steroid injections to manage things for a while. By just the next day he was so much weaker, it seemed kindest to let him go peacefully, we didn't want him to suffer. The vet felt it must have spread more widely. But it feels so sudden doesn't it. And hard to believe.

Aww I'm so sorry to hear the awful news.
Your cat sounded lovely.
The shock is awful.I hope you can feel some comfort in the great 12 years you had with her.
I was in the same position a few months ago The shock is stunning isn't it.
He was a feral street cat we rescued 8 years ago, and was always missing. He had been out for a week and a friend spotted him and we picked him up.
I was so shocked to see how much weight he lost in the week.
Took him straight to the vet and she found a huge tumour in his gut that had spread to his other organs.
She had given his MOT a few weeks earlier and found nothing other than a little weight loss.
Take care 💐

Sorry pressed too soon.
The vet said he could have a course of steroids which may help to prolong his life, but I couldn't do that to him.It was very peaceful.

I am a little calmer now (not actually bursting into tears every five seconds) but still just so very sad. She was a wonderful companion and we will miss her so much. Sorry to hear similar stories from others - it’s amazing how they can go so suddenly downhill.

I'm so sorry to read about your loss @FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping . I posted this time last week about losing our little boy to kidney disease. It was a bit different, as we had known for a long time that he was sick, but he was coping magnificently, until he just wasn't. It is a terrible shock. I have been more upset than I ever expected to be and actually phoned the Blue Cross bereavement line as I needed to talk so badly. I know things will get better but it really does hurt.
