Our 2 year old girl is long haired, Alately ive noticed around her bottom has bits stuck in her fur and this morning noticed she has some dried poo stuck there too. she won’t let me anywhere near her bum and she hates water so can’t bath her. can anyone suggest any other ideas, she smells and clearly needs some help cleaning that area.

It can be quite a controversial point for many, but what has worked for me is raw food. I buy from a reputable, local stockist and I've never looked back. I've always had cat,s and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've been raw feeding for the last 6 years and the improvement I've seen in poo output alone, is astonishing.

I would either book her in with a cat groomer or you can buy spray shampoo that you don't need to wash out, swaddle her in a towel, place her under your arm facing behind you so you can get to her backside.
If you have another pair of hands, they can feed her treats whilst you spray and brush out her fur.

You could swap your smelly cat for my smelly guinea pig.😁 She had poo in her paws today 😷

I agree with PP about feeding a raw diet. Poos are small, crumbly and essentially odourless. Otherwise, the vet can give her a sanitary shave to keep her back bits tidy.

I'm afraid you'll have to get a co worker who will hold her with tail towards him while you trim around her bottom. Sharp scissors are best but obviously you need to be careful not to stab her with them.
Also get a face flannel, soak it with water and give her a wash!
Our long haired gets runny poos if we change her diet/give her too much to eat

My feral cat could be an all teeth and claws demon but I still bathed her when she needed it. Maybe two people and go to a dog or cat groomer and get had a bum shave. Most long haired cats get one.
She'll be outraged but needs must.

I don’t think Whiskas is the best. Ours has dry James Wellbeloved

menopausalfart · 08/04/2025 16:25

@Overtheatlantic Like you said, their poo doesn't stick as it's a drier consistency. It's a game changer.

Is it as "good" for them as man made food? I ask because when I was a child, our cat only ate raw food but she died quite young (14) of organ failure

I would prefer to feed raw, but worry about this aspect

menopausalfart · 08/04/2025 17:25

@queenofthesuburbs If it's in the correct ratio of meat to bone to offal, there's nothing better. Man-made products often contain a lot of filler that they can't digest properly. It's why their poo tends to stink.

menopausalfart · 08/04/2025 17:27

@queenofthesuburbs If you'd like to find out more, join a few raw feeding groups. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but there's a lot of info out there from people who have been feeding raw for years.

Our previous cat was long haired and rather overweight,so couldn’t reach her back end to clean it. She wouldn’t usually let us near her bum to clean it, but we put licky lix on one of those rubber mats with groves in and she was so concentrated on getting every last bit out of the mat she didn’t care what we did. My DH made sure she didn’t move and I put on disposable gloves and trimmed her bum. Worked like a charm. Did it every 6 weeks or so just to keep the fur short and it didn’t get mucky then

Hygiene trim at the vet?
