Neighbour is mad at my cat - cat tracker recommendations?

We live in a tiny country village, our cat spends much time outside and is a hunter. Unfortunately she does sometimes catch birds, which I hate, but mostly goes for mice and the occasional rat. We generally keep her in at night, especially around this time of year to avoid the dawn chorus and busy bird activity. Our neighbour across the road is furious as she found a dead bird in the garden and assumed our cat is the culprit. She probably is but there are a couple of other cats on the street which also might have been guilty. Normally we are fairly friendly, but she's very much the lady of the village, and we are the plebs in the tiny cottage opposite. I have seen her be very unpleasant to a perfectly innocent dog walker before now, because his dog, on a lead, barked at hers. She can definitely be tricky.

Her garden is surrounded by hedges and she likes to encourage birds so I do understand her being annoyed at an invading cat, but she has raged at my husband and been quite unreasonable, demanding we either keep the cat indoors or get rid of her.

I made the mistake of purchasing a toy water spray gun with a long range for her to use as the cat is intelligent and quite cautious, I do believe she would quickly learn to avoid the garden if she was shooed and sprayed every time she ventured in. But in hindsight I might have expected the tacky plastic toy from China would be unwelcome. It basically inflamed her more. She doesn't have plastic in the house and doesn't have time to be running around spraying our cat and she's even more furious.

I have looked at smelly things to sprinkle around the garden to discourage cats, but Amazon reviews are not particularly encouraging, and I'm guessing she would object to them as well. Likewise a sonic type thing, that makes a high pitched sound - seems to be effective but also discourages birds and dogs so that isn't an option.

We put a collar with a bell on it and the cat went demented, she always vigorously fought against collars from kitten hood. But she is now settling down with the collar without the bell. Apparently being bright and fluorescent means birds are more likely to see it.

Now I'm looking at trackers - they are quite expensive and a bit big, I'm not sure she will accept it, but maybe if we persevere with the collar, an additional item on it will be accepted. I like the idea of one that we can make buzz or ring if she goes outside a preset boundary, so we can possibly train her to avoid the garden. Plus being able to see where she goes and get a history, which might show whole days when she hasn't ventured into the garden that we can bring up as evidence.

I can't really think of anything else to do. Any ideas?

These are the trackers I'm looking at. You have to buy a subscription to the app, but I think a one of for the year would do it, hopefully things would settle down and it's not something I would need to use longer term.

There are some others but they variously seem even bigger and more expensive. She's a small, dainty cat, so even these do look quite big, it will take some getting used to for her.

I wouldn’t be entertaining anything of the sort. Send your batty neighbour a link to cat deterrents on amazon and have no more conversations with her about. She’s batshit.

Squiggles23 · 08/04/2025 13:26

Agree with pp- the neighbour is batshit!
The cat is… being a cat.

WindmillOfBones · 08/04/2025 13:28

You don't need to say anything to your neighbour other than you'll have a word with the cat.

You can get a collar attachment for an Apple airtag, which might work out cheaper. I got the Samsung airtag equivalent for £13 and the collar bit for about a fiver last year.

Brilliant 😆

Note my username...She really is batshit. Stop pandering to her and let your cat be.

Wizzywoo18 · 08/04/2025 13:33

Agree with all the above replies - this neighbour clearly assumes she can say 'Jump' and the world replies 'How high?'!!

She's being completely unreasonable. Ignore her.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 08/04/2025 13:35

She's not also planning a series of summer parties is she?

Wondering if you live on the same road as another poster...

DuskyPink1984 · 08/04/2025 13:37

I would stand up to this dreadful woman. I would also make a point of telling her that if any harm comes to my cat, I will assume that she is responsible.

huuskymam · 08/04/2025 13:40

She has zero proof it's your cat. I'd tell her to cop on, if there's a few cats wandering, how does she know which one did it. I had 2 dead birds in my garden last summer, both flew straight into the window, no cat involved.

DuskyPink1984 · 08/04/2025 13:40

I just wanted to add that years ago, a neighbour of my parents hammered nails into the top of her fence to prevent cats entering her garden. My mum saw what was going on and went out and told her very sternly to remove them immediately to avoid injuring animals (including our cats). Neighbour obliged (looked quite sheepish) and no more came of it. You have to stand up to these people.

ScottBakula · 08/04/2025 13:44

we can possibly train her to avoid the garden.
Oh lord thank you for the laugh @MadatmyCat
It is horrible that your cat may of killed the bird in her garden but you have given her the option to spray your cat if it goes in there.
I would offer to buy what ever the best selling cat repellent powder is or put a few pounds ( depending on garden size ) of ground pepper down.
And do nothing else except maybe put a tracking tag on your cat just incase she goes 'missing'

I don't think she is the party sort 😉 is there a similar thread?

The slightly funny thing is she also mentioned to DH that they are having problems with rats in their enormous house that they rattle around in. Her best option would be to invite our cat in..😅

I just hate unpleasantness so trying to appease and seek peace.
It's a shame she won't choose to rage at the cat rather than the owners - like I said I feel very sure that if she turned the hose on her (if she has one, given that they tend to be plastic) she would seen choose to avoid the garden. It's not as if she doesn't have plenty of space to roam, there's some woodland slightly further down the lane she goes in sometimes.

Ineedanotherholidaynow · 08/04/2025 13:50

She can’t do anything. Cats are free to roam and are protected by law

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 08/04/2025 13:52

She's an idiot. If she challenges you again, just tell her to let her dog chase the cat off if she sees it.

I've got a terrier, and all the neighbourhood cats avoid our garden like the plague in case she suddenly bursts out and sprints up the garden after them. Which is a shame, because I love cats! The dog, on the other hand, does not.

Yes, this. I'd also tell her politely (ish) that the way she speaks and 'rages' at you is not acceptable. Lady of the village or not, she can fuck off.

Stickytreacle · 08/04/2025 13:53

The more you try to accommodate this batshittery then the worse the demands will become.
Pawfit do cat trackers, but having witnessed cats with horrific injuries due to even 'safe:' collars I wouldn't use them.
You are doing everything sensible to prevent the cat predating birds.
I'd sit back, allow the cat to be a cat and enjoy the show. 😉

Ooh , get creative and make a handful of flyers promising;

Environmentally friendly pest extermination,
Local to . .your area
Available at . . . . Whatever time suites you.
And your phone number

Then when she phones you turn up with your cat and say either it's £s or So it's ok for my cat to kill some living creatures . . . .

WonderingWanda · 08/04/2025 13:56

The local sparrow hawk is the culprit when there a dead bird around here.

Pigeonqueen · 08/04/2025 14:07

You’ve made the mistake of trying to entertain her so far. She’s an idiot. Cats go where they like, and unfortunately sometimes they kill wildlife. There’s not much anyone can do about it apart from the quick release collars with a bell etc which sometimes work. I’d be more concerned she might be nasty to your cat more than anything; there are some real weirdos about like that woman on the news a while back who was picking up cats and shutting them in wheelie bins.
