If I said this to the vet would the think I was bonkers?

My cat is around 13. Has been really healthy and only issue was two teeth needing to be removed last year as one was broken and the other loose. He's been very vocal about wanting his food, sometimes asking for more food after just being fed. Just now he came and sat with me and laid on my arm before standing up. He then seemed to shake a bit. I encouraged him off the side onto the sofa and he's snuggled in really quickly next to me. I'm just getting a bad feeling he's not well.

Cat photo tax paid. Hopefully makes up for bonkers post.

Hi , i'm a vet nurse ,we wouldn't think you were bonkers , we would listen to your concerns and examine your cat , listen to his heart and we can always run some bloods for a bigger picture .
Never worry about seeing a vet if you're worried , he is gorgeous btw !

whatisforteamum · 05/04/2025 21:18

What a beautiful cat.Bit like my young ginger lad.
Please get him checked out.

2025willbemytime · 05/04/2025 21:18

Thank you. I did ask them a couple of weeks ago and they looked back at his weight and told me to weigh him again and ring in if significantly different. It wasn't but him asking for food and then other times happily going without for hours, is new. It wasn't just him shaking and then me thinking hmm. I'm not feeling great myself as smelling things that aren't there, feel sick and headachy so wonder if I'm just on edge.

If you feel there's something "not quite right", and you can afford / have insurance, then take him to the vets and get the tests. If nothing is amiss then it will set your mind at ease. If there is something then it will turn up in the tests. Your vets will totally understand. Sometimes, you just know there is something "off".... Hope your gorgeous boy is absolutely fine and just causing you anxiety because that's "cat"!

He's not insured as ex h decided to cancel it but I'll pay whatever I have to. He's gone to sleep in the dog's bed so I'll watch him closely and see what he does over the next day or so. Thank you.

Oh bless him, he doesn't look well, he's got that preoccupied look.

Have you got a carbon monoxide alarm @2025willbemytime 🤔 (headachey and smelling things that arent there, although could be covid or sinuses) hope your both feeling better soon😺

You could have Covid. And if you have it then your cat could have it too. Maybe you both need some tlc, a warm bed and chicken soup for a bit.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 06/04/2025 00:11

Get him checked over. My late cat developed vestibular disease which really disoriented him. He also had epilepsy and wet himself, plus diabetes. We got him medications for all his woes and he lived to be 20+.

I think I'm just very stressed tbh. I've been trying to move house for months and have been messed about by vendors, buyers, solicitors, builders.

I've got a cold, the odd cough but hadn't thought I could be physically poorly tbh.

Your vet won't think you're bonkers, on the contrary mine told me they always take it very seriously if an owner says there's something not right with their animal because they know them best. You will probably have to take him in for a full examination though.

It might help to take some videos of whatever looks a bit off, even if that doesn't amount to much. Sometimes particular postures or movements can give the vet a clue.

Hope you both feel better soon.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 06/04/2025 08:19

My old boy developed hyperthyroidism and he was and still is hungry at weird times. He is a lot better now he is stabilised.
I took his sister to the vet once because she fainted after vomiting. I'm definitely of the school of thought that takes the cat to the vet.
You do seem to have had a tough time yourself recently I hope your property issues resolve soon.

Malvala · 06/04/2025 08:23

Cats are very in tune with their person so he could be just “off” because he senses you’re not well.

I hope everyone feels better soon!

Oh sorry! He does have a preoccupied look about him though, maybe he was plotting revenge!

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/04/2025 10:52

That beautiful face!

13 isn’t particularly old but go with your gut and get him checked out.

2025willbemytime · 06/04/2025 14:22

He was fast sleep but as I approached to take a photo he got up.

I gave him extra breakfast then he was asking again when I got back with the dog 1.5-2 hours later so I gave him some biscuits. He said it was tea time at 1.25 but wasn't bothered when I didn't feed him. He's gone back to sleep on the windowsill now.

I am very in tune with my animals and known for them living a lot longer than average, plus I listen to my gut so we'll see how he goes this week. My son will be home later in the week so if my cat is okay until then I'll see what he thinks.

photo tax paid to thank you all

I took my old boy to the vet because I touched his shoulder and he “looked” like he might nip me. This was a cat that would cry if he accidentally caught me with his claw
The vet was a bit Confused but as she picked him up, a massive abscess on his shoulder exploded

2025willbemytime · 06/04/2025 15:11

Poor lunacat. Is he okay now?

Yes he recovered well! He was such a soft lump that for him to even glare at me, I knew something was wrong

2025willbemytime · 06/04/2025 17:05

I'm glad he's okay.

It's just reminded me that mine hissed at the dog a couple of days ago and they are friends. I don't know if she spooked him though.

Bingbong2000 · 06/04/2025 17:10

If he is hungry at 13 could be thyroid. Can be easily sorted with medication (but it's expensive)

2025willbemytime · 06/04/2025 17:13

Wouldn't he be asking for food constantly? He calls me for breakfast, has it, tries to say he needs more which I'm tending to give him now then he's fine until he decides it's tea time which was 1.25 today. When he got nothing he was okay. Had tea at 4.40 and has wandered off. He won't come for more food until 9 ish and he'll get bedtime biscuits around 10 when I go to bed.
