How to encourage kitten to toilet outside?

Just that really….

Our 10 months old kittens have not long been going out and have definitely upped the time outside due to this lovely spring weather the past couple of weeks. We have 3 trays inside but was hoping they’d start going to the toilet outside (will always have one or two inside as they will always be in overnight).

At moment they are happily playing outside but literally run in to use the litter tray then run back out to carry on exploring!!

Any way we could encourage them?? Was wondering about putting some of their used litter outside for the smell?

It just happened naturally over time with my 2. I didn't need to encourage them to do it.

I’m no help but just came on to say my two do the same run in the house to have a wee then run straight back outside again!

none of the cats I’ve had have ever gone outside. They’ve all come back in to use the tray!

Put the litter tray right next to the door. Then after they're using it there place it outside the door for a few hours. Then simply withdraw it fully.
They have an instinct to toilet outside and when the weather is fine it's a good time. Ideally if there's a place with some coverage from rain outside then they can adopt it as a toilet and use it in all weather.
This method worked for all my cats over the last thirty years.

It's taken a few weeks for mine. You could pop a litter tray outside in a sheltered area, initially a used one so it smells right. I always keep an emergency one in the house but it is small and used only every few months, normally when it's very windy.

Cats should always have a safe, secure place to go to the toilet. Please don’t take that away from them.

Put the litter tray outside by the door. We have recently done this with our almost 1 year old cat who was refusing to go outside for the toilet. We left it outside a few days then just took it away. No accidents and he just goes outside to do his business. Hate litter trays so I am happy about that.

Our previous cat started toileting outside as soon as we began letting her out. We always kept two litter trays in the house but she would rather have burst than use them.

We sadly had to have her pts last year, and adopted a one year old boy shortly afterwards. He’s now two, and generally comes in to use the tray rather than toilet outside, regardless of the weather. I think some cats just prefer it!

Our 2 Dcats are 6 years old and always seem to come indoors to use their litter trays.

My cats are now three but I remember being frustrated that they came inside to use the litter box. But eventually they did go outside. I do keep a litter box inside in case it’s raining out but they don’t mind the rain!

Ours took a few weeks. We didn't encourage her and we still keep a litter tray in the house as she tends to use it if she's not feeling very well. I think it will happen eventually but gradually.

purdypuma · 11/04/2025 07:59

My previous cats always toileted inside. The current 2 go outside but will use a tray if they are in overnight & need to go. It's not something they've been trained to do, just happened over time.

Having provided my two cents, our little darling has decided to start using the tray again 😆I think it's the windy weather.
