Cat very ill

My lovely cat is very ill. She hasn’t eaten in days. The vet has given her meds to try to make her eat, but that if she doesn’t eat soon then it’s time to let her go.

She’s very old and has other conditions. I’m struggling with when to know it’s time. I know people say that it’s better too soon than too late but it’s still such a hard decision.

Oh that’s so sweet she went to sit in the sun. Vet is booked for tomorrow. I was just looking at old photos and it’s made it even more clear. Even ones from a few months ago look so different.

I use a vet that comes out to the house. I would advise that if you can

AndrogynousElf · 03/04/2025 12:04

Yes, the vet will come to the house.

So sorry OP, I am dreading this moment with my two young healthy cats. Sounds like she’s had a very good and happy life with you 💐💐💐

AndrogynousElf · 03/04/2025 20:24

She’s sat on my lap again. Purring like crazy after one bite of food.

Cats purr when they're distressed as well, it's a self soothe thing. It doesn't always mean they're happy.

It sounds as if she's had a good life. Enjoy the cuddles for now. I'm sorry man.

Sorry to read this and thoughts for you and your cat. I hope after she has gone you can cherish all the love she gave to you and the happy times.

AndrogynousElf · 03/04/2025 21:53

She’s being doing this kind of repetitive monotone purr that I think is the self soothing. When she sat on my lap she did the really lovely purr with the little high pitched trills at the end. But that purr only lasted about 10 mins. Then it went back the monotone one.

i know it’s the right time now.

I’m so sorry OP, it sounds like she has had a wonderful life with you, and you so clearly want to do right by her. She will be surrounded by love right until the very end. Sending big hugs to you both.

This is really hard. She’s perked up a tiny bit.

How are you doing @AndrogynousElf ?

AndrogynousElf · 04/04/2025 21:47

Just so sad now. It was very peaceful in the end but I can’t believe I actually went through with it.

You did the brave, kind thing for your darling kitty. It’s terribly sad and hurts so much, but your cat is out of pain and had a long, happy life.

Is there anything you would like to do to remember her by? We got some of our favourite photos printed and framed, and we got a nice urn for her ashes which sits on the hearth. I also asked the vet to do her paw prints which she sent me in a card. I got one of those tattooed on my inner arm a few weeks later. (Not for everyone, I know.)

I had to take our boy for his boosters today. The last time I was in the vet was saying goodbye to our girl/collecting her ashes. Today I cried in the waiting room - that’s a year down the line from when she was pts. The vet must think I am deranged.

AndrogynousElf · 05/04/2025 06:18

We’re gonna print out some favourite photos to put on the wall.

It’s all happened so suddenly in the end. The vet yesterday agreed it was the right time. Stopping eating means they can go into liver failure which would be painful. A few bites in 3 days isn’t enough. This time last week I had no idea she’d have to be put to sleep.

I slept better last night but have woken up crying. I can imagine crying a year later too.

I remember this up and down with Bluebell, she had a stroke and I was going to take her and then a day later she was fine. Then a couple of days sleeping and she was fine.
She was 21. When the end came I just knew, she wouldn't eat or drink and she couldn't jump on the bed, she went into a cupboard and wouldn't come out. I took her that day.
Trust your instincts, it's obvious when they reach the end.

Just saw your last message, I was on the wrong page. I'm so sorry but you knew it was time. Big hugs xxxxx

AndrogynousElf · 05/04/2025 15:47

I’m glad we did it before she was in real pain. House feels really quiet. Even though cats are quite quiet anyway.
