Visiting cat attacking my cat

Hi has anyone successfully stopped another cat attacking their cat?? My cat is now having to have another abscess drained after being bitten by a large cat who keeps visiting my cat! We chase him away when we see him but not sure what else might work - it’s getting expensive… thanks 🙏🏼

Is it happening in the house? We have a cat flap that is activated by our cat’s microchip so other cats can’t get in.

You shouldn't have to pay for the vets bill.
My cat is an aggressive swine so he is a house cat but got out twice and attacked my neighbours cat.
I paid the bill without question and bought cat treats and wine for them .
As for keeping it away from your cat , throw noisy things towards it , soda can filled with gravel , a bell , plastic bag .
It needs to be heavy enough to aim accurately and travel the distance but not to heavy that it will hurt the cat if you accidentally hit it .

Water is always a good idea but unless you are a crack shot with a preloaded water pistol it's not particularly practical

I can’t really prove it is their cat - but I will message the owner. We have a microchipped cat flap so he is visiting our garden, is such a huge cat he runs so fast when he sees any of us so my water pistol endeavours have been in vain. But I will make some missiles… My cat is 10 and barely leaves the garden.

Cage trap baited with food, then once cat in trap , rattle it around, bash the trap with a stick and turn the hose on it for a few seconds, then release cat. It's pretty unpleasant for the cat, but not as unpleasant as a fight, bite and the resulting abscess is for your cat.

I’ve had the exact same issue for months - large cat coming in and bullying my wee one who is too scared to even go in her own garden.
Spraying it didn’t work - it stayed where it was and hissed at me!
I resorted to keeping a huge jug by the back door; whenever I see the cat I fill it quickly and throw it over it. It seems to have worked

TenderChicken · 25/03/2025 23:18

Diasgree that is someone else's responsibility to pay your vet bills here. A risk of letting your cat out is that it will fight with other cats.

No advice otherwise. I used to have a cat that would come into my house and fight with my cats (the cat wasn't owned by anybody but had been fed by our house's previous owners) The problem was solved by someone down the road starting to feed him. Not much help to your situation!

@TenderChicken , it may not of been my responsibility but its the right thing to do as far as I am concerned.
@pashmina696 I think it would be worth approaching the cats owner but you may get short shrift.

Can you get a dog? Or dog sit one for a few days!?

Favouritefruits · 26/03/2025 09:20

If your cat isn’t interested in leaving your garden why not cat proof the fence so the visiting cat can’t get in? It might be a big up front cost but should be cheaper in the long run.

My cat would get more stressed by a dog, and they are fighting on the driveway - my neighbour has a dog but her cat was attacked too by this same cat on my driveway!

We have mostly hedges not fence -cat proofing would be the ideal but it’s going to be very expensive

@ScottBakula I spoke to the owner today she wasn’t for believing it was her cat as he doesn’t do these things apparently… he is also being attacked by their neighbours cat! I have permission at least to spray him with water.

Got my little cat back from the vet today, hoping insurance covers this procedure…

@pashmina696 , I am sorry your cats bully won't pay up.
I guess it's going to be hard to prove that it was their cat unless you or another nighbour has a ring door bell / cctv that caught the scrap ?

pashmina696 · 26/03/2025 22:14

@ScottBakulathe pet filter on my camera doesn’t seem to pick up cats!! It would be hours of trawling I think…

Hose pipe does it here!

Flossflower · 26/03/2025 22:23

If you have a water gun put some cooking oil in with the water. The cat will really not like this.

whatswrongwivme · 26/03/2025 23:36

You don't say if the cat is actually coming into your house but that was what was happening with us and it was making my cat a nervous wreck. He spent all his time staring intensely out of the cat flap or spraying on the walls to Mark his territory, and was vigilant 24 hours a day. But this cat kept coming in through the cat flap and my cat was having huge screaming fights with him on a daily basis. We solved it very quickly in the end: I simply purchased a water pistol and the next time that cat came in we gave it one good hard shot of water and the cat has never returned.

pashmina696 · 26/03/2025 23:40

He doesn’t come inside we have a chipped cat flap - I have tried to get him with the water pistol but he is so fast! Will keep trying
