Matted fur

I have a rag doll. His coat is starting to get quite matted in places and I was wondering what others have used to get mats out?

Has anyone used pet clippers? I'm looking at some on Amazon, but he's not the bravest cat in the world, and I'm worried he'll run a mile when I turn them on.

I can sometimes manage to cut the smaller ones out when he's distracted with food but he seems to be getting wise to it now.

Thanks so much in advance

We have Siberians and they have matting potential. We use a local groomer - we've now found a mobile groomer who is amazing - they are much more skilled than we are in doing it!

Cornflour to dry them out and remove the oil - this loosens the matt slightly. You might then be able to comb it out firstly with the wide and then the narrow side of a pet comb. If they’re tighter, use a stitch unpicker (sold for sewing use) with the sharp side away from his skin.

You have to keep on top of brushing them even though they hate it and will not be helped! I’ve got long haired cats and only with bribing them with treats every night will they permit being brushed.

Mine tolerate the square ‘slicker’ style brush best but I don’t think it really gets through - it does remove lots of loose fur though. I have to go in with the comb and put them through five minutes of Utter Abuse.

I also found a groomer and I end up getting my cat clipped a couple of times a year as he gets matts really badly

With our late long haired cat , I used to have to brush her daily to keep on top of knots. If a knot was too matted I used to cut with grooming scissors. I did find that some of the cat spray shampoos worked quite well to help detangle.

Yes to clippers, to get those clumps that won’t budge with the brush. Do not use scissors- one of my cats jerked away from me while I was trying to cut off a bad patch, and I ended up slicing off a chunk of his skin! He needed stitches!!
