Settling 1 year old adopted cat with 3 others

Hi All,

Today we adopted a 1 year old male cat.

We already have 2 sisters who will be 3 in June and a male who will be 2 in August.

They're not all getting along swimmingly as yet which I obviously expect at this stage - it's been 12 hours!

However, I would like some advice on how to make him feel comfortable and to settle in. He's already cwtching on my lap and head bumps for smooths but then he can suddenly turn and bite/scratch even though he has initiated the contact.

Also my 3 do not scratch the furniture but he does and I don't like to tell him off (very gently, i.e. Just saying no firmly).

I need to cut his nails and we're terrified he will shred us to pieces in the process or bite one of my fingers off.

Cat tax duly paid 😻

It’s very very soon to have introduced them all - I would put him in his own space to give him a chance to settle.

put him in his own room for now , we had our adopted cat in the laundry room for a while. tbh though, you will just have to let them get on with it. We've had various cats over the years, come to us at different time and they do eventually find their own way and sort it out themselves. We have 1 ten yeat old, an 11 year old and twins of 8 months. :)

Have him spending some time in a different part of the house is good advice we have a rescue girl too and we also used to foster for local cats protection and it can take time for them to settle we have 5 other cats she is never going to be best friends but they run along okay most of the time

Ideally you should keep the new cat in a room on their own for a few days, and do scent swapping items from that room with ones the existing cats use e.g. blankets, toys.

Have a look at Jackson Galaxy on YouTube, he's got some great stuff on introducing new cats to the household.
