Took dcat to vets for tooth procedure - surprised at the emotion felt !

Our cat has been chucking up several times a day and the vet suspects her teeth .( She's doing lots of overgrooming, so potentially self soothing = hairballs )
She's having bloods , an exray , a ga for a scale & polish and any extractions required .
Took her in first thing and felt really emotional leaving her there . She looked very upset as we were leaving.
Was quite tearful !

Yes! We took dcat for a dental in February. I thought just routine, will be fine. Felt very tearful leaving her there. Bless her, she was so happy to be home though. She recognised the front door coming back in her carrier, all excited and once in, rushed round between all of us while looking round everywhere, obviously sooo pleased and happy to be back. It was absolutely adorable and I loved her even more if that was possible. Her pupils were also massive, out of her head on whatever they’d given her! Hope you can fetch your dcat back very soon. Ours is so much happier and obviously relieved that her teeth don’t hurt anymore. I wish they could tell us!

@Cardiganwearer
Love your name ! Great minds ( and cardi 's )
Glad your car is the better for it .
Hope ours stops the vomiting and vets hunch is correct.
Cleaning sick with hair in off the carpet ( and bed ) several times a day won't be missed !

One of my girls had a dental in January - the fasting beforehand was awful and I felt like the meanest person,
What made me also cry was when they went through the intake form and asked what measures I'd like to take if live saving measures are required.

My other girl is due for hers in a couple of months - I'm dreading it.

Likeagreatcardi · 19/03/2025 13:12

@Selttan
Crikey we wasn't asked that , ours is nearly 12 , is yours more elderly ?
The bloods were due to her age , I think they check a few things before the ga , bloods are recommended after age 8 apparently .
Yes she was most indignant at not being fed first thing this morning.
We fed her at 9 o'clock last night , when usually it's a few treats at ten , then some food in her bowl for overnight.
When we fed her at 9 we went to bed after so she would have thought her routine was the same !
Then this morning because she kept crying and going to her bowl we ended up getting her in her basket and driving about to get her out of the house.
The things we do for our cats !

How is your dcat @Likeagreatcardi? (Love that we both have cardi names!) I hope she’s ok. Thankfully our dcat didn’t mind her painkillers in with her food. Such a relief to get them back safe and sound. We were asked about CPR too @Selttan Ours has just turned 14 so maybe they ask for the older cats. It did rather bring the gravity of the whole thing to us. The fasting felt cruel too. Oh, to be able to explain things to them! I was never a cat person but ours just kind of moved in, with the blessing of the neighbour who she belonged too because she was very unhappy at their house because of other pets. And she’s got my heart now!

Likeagreatcardi · 20/03/2025 08:01

Thanks for asking , she's happy to jump up to the window sill and look out at the birds but not to jump up to her bed on the sofa and didn't come to our bed last night as normal , it's almost like she's forgot her routine . She slept on the floor last night .
She ate a fair bit last night , but hasn't shown much interest in her food this morning which has her medication in .

I'm in Aus -my girls 7. I think it's a liability thing that's recently come in as when she had a clean a couple of years ago we weren't asked.

Likeagreatcardi · 24/03/2025 16:49

Took dcat back to the vets today , she has been still vomiting , is quite subdued and still not eating very much , and only 1 poo in 4 days .
Vet looked in her mouth and took her temperature for signs of infection and thankfully all was ok .
She thinks possibly just taking longer to recover or her Loxicom medication is not suiting her . Have her an anti sickness jab and told to stop the Loxicom .
Hope she improves over next few days .

OP posts:
Cardiganwearer · 24/03/2025 17:15

Sorry to hear your poor puss isn’t feeling better. It might be the Loxicom making her sick, we were told that too. It’s good there is no infection. I hope she improves soon, bless her ❤️

Likeagreatcardi · 24/03/2025 17:21

@Cardiganwearer

Thanks , yes the vet has said that and the info sheet in the box says it might cause vomiting so fingers crossed 🤞

Fingers crossed 🤞

Likeagreatcardi · 25/03/2025 14:28

She's very subdued today , keeping away from us and not eating much .

OP posts:
Cardiganwearer · 25/03/2025 20:47

Aww. I hope she picks up soon. Has she been sick again? Did they give you an alternative painkiller?

Likeagreatcardi · 25/03/2025 22:29

No sickness yesterday or today , the get didn't give us any different painkillers .

2025GoodGrief · 25/03/2025 22:42

I'm so sorry you're going through this, I really am.

I suggest that you ask the vet tomorrow what the blood tests actually showed. She doesn't sound a well girl at all.

Make sure they see her tomorrow too and give her treatment. She should be 100% by now (don't mean to worry you x).

Thinking of you and her 💐😿

Theunamedcat · 25/03/2025 22:44

Have you tried her on the cat soups?

Likeagreatcardi · 26/03/2025 05:46

We feed her on Katkin which is subscription pure meat cat food .
We are adding water to it and serving slightly warmed .

OP posts:
Cardiganwearer · 26/03/2025 07:27

I’m surprised they didn’t give her some different painkillers. Our cat needed them for quite a while after her op. Maybe going on for 2 weeks. The being subdued and hiding may mean she’s got pain, bless her.

Likeagreatcardi · 26/03/2025 12:47

I've phoned the vets and told them she is keeping away from us and could it be down to pain . They've prescribed some gabapentin tabs.

OP posts:
Iloveanicegarden · 26/03/2025 13:04

Good luck with the gabapentin. Most of the cats that we've been slaves to could be persuaded to open mouth and swallow pills - but not our latest. We've tried hiding it in food - nah!, (It's only a tiny pill too) We've tried squashing into the end of a dental chew. She bit off the end with the pill and spat it out. We've crushed it and mixed it with food, Licky-lix and even the liquid painkiller she has - all to no avail. Short of force feeding her the pill we're at wits end. Any ideas?

Likeagreatcardi · 26/03/2025 13:34

They gave us a pill syringe thing ( called it a gun ) and third time lucky with the pill getting softer & softer , it thankfully went down her .

OP posts:
Cardiganwearer · 26/03/2025 18:19

Well done for getting the pill down her! I hope she feels better soon.

Cardiganwearer · 02/04/2025 19:11

Hi @Likeagreatcardi How is your dcat doing? I hope she’s ok.

Likeagreatcardi · 16/04/2025 13:25

@Cardiganwearer

Sorry I've only just seen your post.
Thanks for asking.
No too well unfortunately , she's lost loads of weight and is not looking after herself , although we are brushing her she's got a right messy coat . Sleeping most of the time as well . She's been back and forth to the vets and has been to the vets again today for a full blood count as the vet wonders if she has Hyperthyroidism .
We had to give her a tablet to sedate her before the appointment as the vet also wanted to give her mouth a good look.
She did note the area is still showing as very red so wonders if some root remained.
They gave her an antibiotic vaccine on Monday which is 48 hours and then again today.
Find out about the blood results tomorrow.
If that's OK they might have to give a general anesthetic to take an x ray and further surgery if applicable.
Will come back tomorrow when we know more.
