Cat keeps loudly miaowing at night

My old moggy (14) has always often done a loud miaow alarm at 4 or 5 am which I’ve tolerated as I’m an early riser. However of late it’s been 2 or 3 am and I’m struggling to get back to sleep as then she comes to check on us for a few mins by sitting on pillow. Closing bedroom door is worse as she miaows until she gets in. She has a very loud voice and neighbours have also mentioned. She’s always been quite independent and never a lap/cuddle cat but I suppose during the day she’s used to seeing me constantly as I’m a childminder and house is therefore busy! Is there any way if stopping this?

It is something my older cat does too nowadays. I make sure she has her vitamins and plenty of water mixed into her food so that she’s feeling well. At night she often asks for a Beaphar cat calming treat ( they are in a different drawer she goes to sit by) and I think it makes her night time more peaceful.

i would have her checked by a vet. If she is healthy, maybe try Zylkene which will calm her down. It has a milk component (does not cause diarrhea) and has no side effects. Plus it can be bought from Amazon where it is cheaper than getting it from the vet.

Mine also does this and she’s the same age. It can be a sign of feline dementia. I either pick her up and put her in bed with me or go down and sleep on the sofa and she sleeps on my lap. She starts about 4am and really yowls so I worry about disturbing the neighbours.

This is common with feline dementia. I would suggest a chat with your vet.

Or hyperthyroidism which is very common in older cats and needs medication.

Ah our cat done this and it was Dementia
She needed the lights and a little heater on all the time and if she woke and couldn't see us, she would would up and down the hall way miaowing until one of us went and got her, altho the bedroom door was never closed

It was ever so sad seeing her like it and in the end we put her to sleep as she was getting herself in a right state every night

Hope its something else with your moggy and hopefully shes just being a little madam

I’ve got a young male, who has always done this. He patrols the landing at night meowing loudly, DP calls him ‘Little Pavarotti’ but honestly it’s not funny. We’ve got calming sprays, Feliway diffusers and have visited vets. He’s absolutely fine, not stressed, no underlying conditions. He’s just bored and wants attention.
