Best cat litter for an arthritic aged person to lift?

janeandmarysmum · 15/03/2025 18:28

Hi fellow cat slaves I'm currently using a cat litter that is fine, but very heavy and I'm struggling to lift it to pour into their litter trays. Can anyone recommend something that works that is not heavy? I'm currently using Felipure unscented.
Thanks!

My MIL uses ice cream tubs to scoop the litter out of the bag into the tray as the bag’s too heavy for her. Might something like that work?

dementedpixie · 15/03/2025 20:28

You could use a big food scoop maybe rather than picking up the bag

janeandmarysmum · 15/03/2025 20:33

Thanks yes @dementedpixie and @Judystilldreamsofhorses those are good ideas. But I'm also struggling to get the bags from the doorstep (where they are delivered) to the garage (where the trays are).

Was also going to suggest a trolley

Can you ask the delivery person to bring them through?

DonningMyHardHat · 15/03/2025 23:34

Corn based litter like World’s Best or Sanicat?
Much lighter than clay/wood/paper.

PineappleCoconut · 15/03/2025 23:42

I use the 3.8l crystal bags. It's much more expensive online, but cheaper if you have a B&M or home bargains near you.

It doesn't smell when wet, like all other cat litters I've used. I can lift the bags. Cats seem to like it. When scratched out of the tray, you don't want to step on it barefoot (do you ever? Grin) as it is quite sharp.

By the time I've got to the door (I'm very slow) the delivery person is down the road.

Thanks - I don't think I could lift the bags into a trolley. I did use one for school work and the ones I had weren't very robust.

Hmmm... I'll try this. Thank you.

Thank you! I will investigate.

I have been arthritic (horrible term) since I was 30. There are many diseases which affect the joints which have nothing to do with age. HTH.

AltitudeCheck · 16/03/2025 08:49

CatSan is quite light, it also comes in smaller bags which, although not as economical are easier to move.

Alternatively could you scoop part of the delivered bag into another empty bag if you can carry two half bags instead if lifting the full bag (either onto a trolley or carrying it to where it needs to go). Alternatively, could you leave the trolley out when you expect a delivery with a note attached to say please put cat litter on the trolley?

Breakitdownplease · 16/03/2025 08:52

Recycled paper pellets are what I've always used. Much lighter to carry than most other types of litter.

Oh come on. I’m all for calling out ageism - the S&B board is rife with it - but my understanding of this post is that OP is an older person with health issues asking for help with her personal situation ref cat litter, not making a sweeping statement on the age of people with arthritis.

Huh?

OP was referring to herself as an “arthritic aged person” as in, an older person with arthritis.

I think your offence is wildly misplaced.

Nope that doesn't help @janeandmarysmum at all.

Oh good grief. Only on Mumsnet could a discussion about cat litter descend into a ruckus over ageism and terminology.

I'm old and I have arthritis. Aged and arthritic. With a sense of humour.

HTH.

You are a Mumsnet cliche by the way.

@janeandmarysmum
I find the non clumping type much lighter , tescos sell a wood pellet one thats advertised as lightweight which is acctually light , and reasonable priced at £5 for 10lt.
I have bought it for my overlord in the past and he approves.
It also tends not to track much

Thank you so much for this.

Thanks. I think the litter I currently use must be made of lead - I can't lift the smallest bags.

I'm arthritic and in my 30's and baffled by Squashyhat's comment. HTH. 😂

Clumping clay litter is about the heaviest substance known to man! My friends use non clumping litter and it is so much lighter (think it's catsan they use). I do prefer the clumping though, so get the small bags of Bob Martin's from B&M, and can thankfully manage them. I tried the corn stuff too, but didn't get on with that at all, even though I really wanted to as it was lighter and more eco friendly. I think it will be a bit of trial and error to see what works best.
