How do I get the right kittens for us?

Looking at getting a couple of kittens/young cats in the next year or so, but I only have experience of long-haired cats, and that's what I would like.

I don't care about colour or breed or anything, just long hair. Trouble is, all the cats and kittens up for adoption are short-haired, and all the long-haired cats and kittens available to buy are thoroughbreds, and cost hundreds each.

Do I need to give shorties a chance? Or is there a way of finding long-haired moggies for adoption?

When I was looking for kittens I looked around on lots of different rescue sites, and while the majority of cats on there were shorthaired, there were longhaired or medium- haired kittens and cats coming up.

There will be a lot more kittens coming for adoption in the coming months, as kitten season gets underway (and then their young mothers, if you're looking for a young adult cat), so I think it's a question of just keeping an eye open through the spring and summer and checking rescue sites regularly. Lots of people will prefer a shorthaired cat because it's less maintenance, so you may find that the longhaired cats get snapped up less quickly.

I had a long haired cat once, the endless grooming, the endless cat hair everywhere, never again. He was very cute but more high maintenance than any Hollywood star.

We adopted a long haired rescue kitten not that long ago, so they are out there! And as @stormsandsunshine mentioned, we're just coming into kitten season now, so I'm sure they'll soon be lots that need a home soon, just keep a regular eye on the rescue websites.

Why do you want kittens? Only asking as we decided to rescue a pair and they were/are a bloody nightmare. Bitey and scratchy and now they’ve grown up they hate each other. 🤦‍♀️
Rescues may well get long haired kittens in. They will definitely get adult cats. We adopted a lovely adult semi long haired and her short haired son. The great thing about getting an adult is you know what sort of temperament you’ll get. And less chance of the mad scratching beasts. 😆

Where are you based? I foster in South Yorkshire and follow a few other local rescues i have definitely seen long haired come up, not as frequently. Anyway if your around this area drop me a message and I will link you to their pages

We have two medium hair and two long hair moggies who all came from Battersea.
There are fewer long hairs than short hairs in rescues but they do turn up. Just regularly check your local websites and register with them letting them know what you want.

Thanks people, I thought I was going to get flamed!

To my mind it doesn't have to be kittens, but definitely young cats (under 2 or so).

I love the grooming!

We have adopted two long haired cats from CP (not at the same time). Neither were pedigree. Obviously lots more short haired cats around than long haired. Just need to be quick and grab them when they appear online.

Get in touch with the welfare & rescue of long haired breeds you like. They may well have young cats available that need rehome because the original owners couldn’t cope with the grooming.
