My Cat got in a fight and wet herself

Advice really. I have a nearly 14 year old cat. She likes to potter in the garden and does not explore out of my garden and I’d only out for 30 mins max. She is timid but feels safe in her area. I have only lived here for less than a year and there are not many cats who come into the garden. If they do there is an occasional hiss and growl from my cat. but the other cat leaves. Except the black invader

I don’t see much of the invader but when I do there is a cat stand off a few swipes and the invader runs off and my cat goes back to cat business. Except today. I heard the usual growls and saw the slow stand off. I didn’t do much as usually the invader climbs the fence. Except this time it lasted a while but my cat was sitting low and then I noticed the patio was wet.

I chased the other cat away and my cat had wet herself. I feel guilty I hadn’t interrupted and worried she wet herself as terrified. But I have read this could be marking territory.

my cat was an indoor cat for about 10 years. Let her out when I moved to rented house with a safe garden. She loved outside and stood her round with neighbours cats but never wet herself.

any advice or understanding of cat behaviour?

Maybe marking territory. Nothing quite says this is mine like maying eye contact and pissing on it. I would help her out though. Buy a super soaker and take pot shots at the invader, its just water do not going to cause any harm but should hopefully put it off.

Heh my cat was terrified of a new cat. She would poo, but never wee. So it was probably marking territory.

Super soaker to help your cat out.

The invader may be younger and fitter than your middle aged cat so if you can help in any way it might see off the invader permanently.

I’ve seen this before- my cat was in a fight with another cat and seemed to do a little wee during the fight. There was a little puddle under her but I took it more to be about marking territory than about being terrified. Not very nice to see them fighting though!

She's getting to be an old lady as an I . I think I would lose control of my bladder if someone came at me whilst I was minding my own business at home.

LaPetitePouleRousse · 11/03/2025 10:02

Oh, the wee soul! I agree with the advice about getting a super soaker - he is probably stronger and feistier than her, and needs to get the message your little old lady is defended by a hoomin with a strong and directional 'bladder'... At least if she stays close and doesn't go out for long, it should be easier to keep an eye on her. A few regular soakings and he should learn to stay away.

Poor thing. I think it deeply upsets them when they have fight. My cat is 6 and extremely territorial He's absolutely terrified of cats who come into our gardening. He recently had a fight and started pooing himself at the end of it!! I'm sure it was a stress reaction, it was like diarrhoea.

SallyWD · 11/03/2025 10:15

Obviously I don't see every fight because I go to work etc. but when I do see a fight I try and break it up. The easiest way to do this is just get a jug of water and throw it near the cats. I don't throw it on them, just close. This is enough to stop them and the invading cat always runs off. It's an effective method. I once tried to break it up with my bare hands - never again!

The invader has not been back and my cat has resumed her normal garden stroll. She refused to go out the next day though. She is normally waiting at the door in the morning. Day after she was back to wanting to go out and scenting everything.

I am now only letting her out when I am downstairs. She is starting to look old a frail, so trying to avoid any injuries to her as o don’t think she would win.
