Cat missing- cant stop crying

LivingForRedWine · 02/03/2025 13:39

Hi everyone

Just needed to start a thread and hope for some stories from other people whos cats have gone missing but eventually turned up.

We are on day 2 of our 4 year old ginger boy being missing now. It is so out of character for him he has never been out this long. The longest he has ever been out was 12 hours and I was beside myself then!

We have put his litter tray out in the garden, emptied the hoover outside and hung his favourite blanket on the washing line. We have been out calling his name and shaking his dreamies but still nothing. I have asked on the local Facebook group if anyone had seen him but nothing so far.

He is very shy and timid and would never go into someone elses house or be fed by anybody else he runs away from anybody but us. I am thinking the worst now and I cant stop crying.

Has anyone had anything like this happen to their cats but they have eventually come home??

Thanks for reading.

Yes. Our cat was gone for a couple of weeks.
We’d put posters up, flyers through doors but nobody had seen her and I was distraught. She eventually just turned up at the back door.
She’d lost a lot of weight but was otherwise absolutely fine and just wanted lots of cuddles.
I honestly think they just do this. I’m sure he’ll be back but it is awful not knowing where they are.
Sending you love and I hope he’s back very soon.

Thank you so much for replying and sharing your story. I really hope he does come back soon. I will go out looking for him again later when it starts goong dark.

Yes, we've had various cats go missing for a couple of days. What I would say to you is this: in the last couple of days the weather has warmed up. My cats, who have scarcely gone out all winter, are now out almost constantly. Also, people are out in their gardens more now. Perhaps your cat has got locked in someone's shed or garage? It would be worth going and knocking on a few doors. I hope he comes back very soon.

SantaToSSD · 02/03/2025 14:24

Also, assuming he is chipped, have you rung round all the local vets? I always check our road in case they have been runover (sorry, gruesome, but I know you are thinking about it anyway) and, if no-one contacts you from a vets, the likeliest thing really is that they have gone for a little wander and will come back in their own time.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 02/03/2025 14:24

I wonder if putting notes through letterboxes locally might get more attention?
Is there a road parallel to you , whose gardens back on to yours ?
I do feel for you Football
Sorry I meant Flowers

LivingForRedWine · 02/03/2025 15:02

Thank you everyone. Yes he is chipped I will ring around all the vets and will go and knock on doors or post letters through to check sheds ans garages thats a good idea thank you all so much! X

The sun coming out has your neighbours opening sheds, garages and greenhouses.
Your cat has been curious and slipped in somewhere for a nosey.
The door has been shut with dcat shut inside.
Put notes through all your neighbours doors asking them to check the out buildings. Walk around the estate in the evening, every hour on the hour calling for dcat. Keep your ears sharp for the slightest answering mew.
I gave this advice to my dd and it took 7 days for her dp to hear a faint mew, he knocked the door insistently until he had an answer. Beloved dcat was rescued from outhouse within minutes. Thinner, tired, hungry but home.

Best of luck @LivingForRedWine x

We've had cats go missing for up to 10 days (except one who went missing for 3 weeks every summer and came back beautifully groomed, deflead and smelling wonderful, he must have had a holiday home!). Most of the time we've found out they've been stuck in a shed/garage/on a roof, sometimes we never found put and they've just wandered in as if nothing had happened.

I go out early hours and call, you're more likely to hear a meow when it's really quiet. Plus notes through letterboxes as far afield as you can. One by us was found 2 miles away, he had fled that far. I found out that one of ours goes 3 big fields away and likes to chase geese, when he went missing.

Hope you find him soon. I found most people were happy to keep a look out/check sheds while I was there etc but that might be because all the cats we've had that went missing were/are well known.

WonderingWanda · 02/03/2025 17:28

Mine does this occasionally. Once he was discovered sleeping on next doors bed when they returned from weekend away (they's left a window open), another time he got stuck somewhere and smelt strongly of engines and looked a bit sorry for himself. Other times he's returned with mouse and has obviously been off hunting.

Currently he is just fat and lazy and hasn't been outside enjoying this lovely weather at all....I think he is being bullied though.

The longest absence with a happy ending story that I’ve heard was from a work colleague. Her cat went missing and she did all the posters, FB etc but to no avail. Two years later, she had a phone call to say her cat had been found. As luck would have it, the cat had ended up in the garden of a lady who worked for an animal welfare charity and who had easy access to a microchip reader. The cat was returned and settled back in immediately, as if she’d never been away.

LivingForRedWine · 02/03/2025 19:49

Thanks everyone. Still no sign. I have been out shaking his food and calling him again. I have knocked and asked a few neighbours to check their sheds and garages and to keep an eye out for him. Il ring the local vets in the morning they are all closed today. Just sick with worry, but holding on to the fact that no news is good news for now x

Good advice.

BeautyBlanche · 02/03/2025 20:34

i feel for you as when mine went missing it was the worst time of my life and I couldn’t stop crying too.

ask your local cat protection if they have a missing or found list, put posters up everywhere and go out calling for him either very early or very late when it’s not as busy outside. Often they’re not that far away. Ask neighbours to check sheds. Don’t give up hope. Check local social media pages.

Mine returned after six agonising weeks. Good luck hope he’s safely home very soon. X

I have had this happen, and since then, our cats wear trackers (used to have Tiles and now apple tags). Since then, they've not gone missing, so not had opportunity to try them out, but it's worth thinking about for when he comes back. Hope that's soon.

LivingForRedWine · 03/03/2025 07:38
