Cat has fleas?

I think my cat has fleas - any recommendations on the fastest acting flea treatment? I'll be going to pets at home first thing in the morning. Cat has also vomited today - could this be due to fleas or worms? Will be getting worming treatment for them also - any recommendations?

How long does it take for the medications for fleas and worming to kick in typically?

I'm a new cat mum so a bit out of my depth, took cat in due to its owner being unwell and unable to look after them. Will be taking them to the vet if more vomitting.

Don't get either at PatH, over the counter ones don't work. You need to get one on prescription from a vet, we use Bravecto which does fleas ticks and worms and lasts 3 months. For the house get Indorex, you can get that at PatH

Depends what the vomiting was like, most common cause is hairballs

Get Johnson's flea tablets from Pets At Home or Amazon. Crush them between two teaspoons and put the powdered form on top of a layer of Lick-E-Lix, put the rest of the tube over it.
Starts working within 15 minutes and kills all fleas. Get Johnson's spot on according to the weight and use that as well.
8 indoor cats here. Used to all be outdoor (which lead to such a bad flea infestation thanks to the heat in 2020 that we had to get the council out (at cost to me) to spray twice. I fought fleas back and forth now and again afterwards until one of mine was hit by a car and died recently.
The other 8 immediately became indoor cats
Johnson's flea tablets and spot on have eradicated fleas in our house now. Used indorex on all floors as an extra precaution. All good!

Please don't buy or use anything from Johnsons for your pets.

Your cat needs to see a vet.

Floralnomad · 01/03/2025 15:38

You need prescription only flea treatment so take your cat to a vet .

WillIEverBeOk · 01/03/2025 16:05

Bravecto (that you can get over the counter at your local vets) is expensive but the best. Ours are in a pack of 2 and last for 6 months. By then you won't - or shouldn't - see a flea on them. It really gets rid of fleas completely.

Cats sometimes eat food too quickly and then hack it up again. If it's undigested they've eaten too quickly, that's all. It's no big deal unless it's happening regularly. It's what cats do. And no, there is no need to take your cat to a vet (unless it seems really unwell).

Pigeonqueen · 02/03/2025 18:21

You need a vet appointment and Bravecto.

Do not use Johnson’s. So many horror stories about it killing cats or making them very unwell.

DumpedByText · 02/03/2025 19:08

I can't believe someone is recommending Johnson's flea products. Do not use these !

Get to the vet or get some Frontline from PAH.

I use Credelio from the vet for my cats as one of them is allergic to spot on treatments. It's a tablet I mix in tuna and mayo and it works well.

You'll need to flea them monthly or 3 months if using Bravecto. Worming is every 3 months.

WildCherryBlossom · 02/03/2025 20:14

Use whatever your vet recommends and perhaps ask them to change after a couple of months (most vets will have a couple of brands they prescribe).

As PP said - indorex spray (lots of) for your house - all around skirting boards, under beds, in corners, and keep hot washing anything that can be hot washed. The cat's bedding, your bedding etc etc.

I'm sorry OP - it can be a bit of a long haul, but keep at it!

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/03/2025 07:35

Go on Atlantic pets and order Credelio I crush it into a lic lix.
Flea combing is also very satisfying!

I get nexguard combo from the vet. It kills fleas and worms
