So many fleas suddenly?

Our cat is white so fleas are v easy to fine. We give monthly treatment and apart from the odd one or 2 have not seen any. Today he came in from outside and I saw 2 straight away and have since combed about 12 more off him!! Could he have just walked into a flea den and picked them up?
as a side note he’s behaving v strangely past 24 hours - we have a litter tray in the house but he hasn’t used it in about 4-5 months as has free access inside / outside but this morning has pood on kitchen floor. He was also incredibly needy all night, miaowing and sleeping on our heads / necks! He went out fine this morning so the cat flap wasn’t stuck or anything.

could the two be related?

Change in behaviour could be due to discomfort of the visitors

they multiply like noones business. Are you spraying and washing and combing and defleaing

I can't comment on neediness but my cats suddenly had flea treatment failure twice, it happens

We’ve just been treating him monthly as usual but have ordered a load of house treatment too to come tomorrow. I think I got about 30 off in total today - and we groom regularly and as I said, as he’s white it’s v easy to find them! I did see a new cat on our driveway today I’ve never seen before so I wonder if there is another cat in the area who’s passed them on although I doubt 30 would appear in a day.
worried that the eggs have just hatched in our house as it’s been a bit warmer…?!

will be grooming him every day (luckily he loves it) and treating the house.

but how to stop him sleeping in our bed tonight … 😬

Have you had new carpets fitted?

We had a flea infestation from carpets once... apparently there can often be cats in the warehouses!

Treat your carpets and soft furnishings as well as the cat for a bit.

What are you treating with? Some aren’t effective anymore. Make sure to Indorex the house.

OldChairMan · 24/02/2025 21:44

I had a rescue arrive covered in fleas which took hold. In the end a professional pest control treatment (independent firm) was way more effective and in the long run cheaper than endless cans of Indorex.

Yes just ordered indorex.
using On Defence monthly flea and worming subscription - is that effective at all?
this is our first family cat and was a rescue who came to the shelter with really terrible fleas, which the shelter cleared up before he came to us. He is the most perfect family pet but we don’t need the added extra house guests!

On Defence does not look to be effective. You need to get a prescription one from your vet.

If you have fleas then you need to go to the vet and get a prescription strength treatment,

Wolfiefan · 25/02/2025 07:42

Definitely worth a vet visit. Over the counter stuff tends to be ineffective at worst or even harmful in some cases.
