How to prepare for the end?

My lovely cat is just about to turn 20 years old.
She has always been so kitten-like, in looks and personality.
The past 12 months she has gone very downhill. She has gone blind, isn’t as agile as she once was, has signs of dementia…basically lots of things that are all related to age.

The vets have investigated her blood pressure etc, and said that we could be more invasive with the testing if we want real answers.
But because of her age (and especially because she hates the vets and finds it very traumatising to be treated) we came to the conclusion to just let nature take its course.

I can barely remember a time when she wasn’t part of our family. My kids are now 21 and 25 and they’ve grown up with her as a constant companion.

Sorry, I’m rambling.
My question is to anyone who has lost a very dear feline family member: Is there anything I can do to prepare the family for the end? My 25 yr old is autistic and I think he will really struggle, but all of us will find it incredibly difficult.

The think I found helped the most. Was having a plan of what I wanted to happen. I wanted my other cats to be there, and then have individual cremation. When the time came, not having to make decisions, really helped when I was so upset. Having the other cat there, was lovely. Both times they climbed into the carrier together for comfort. And it helped the remaining cat understand. Have a handhold from me OP.
