New rescue cat question

Picked up our new rescue yesterday, she was quite sociable for most of the evening, as well as nervous but to be expected of course.

This morning she was chatty and friendly in the kitchen, but has for most of the day been hiding under a cupboard in the kitchen, and doesn't appear to want to come out anytime soon.

Should we worry? Just seems like she was doing really well yesterday but has regressed today. We had our last rescue for 8 years and I honestly can't remember if she did this.

Just hoping she isn't depressed or something, or on an adrenaline comedown!

Normal - she'll be fine, she's probably decompressing & getting used to the sights & sounds of family life. A kitchen is a busy place for her to be though, she might be happier in a quieter room while she adjusts.

We had very similar with our boy. Night one, super friendly, exploring, wanted pets and let me brush him (which his foster carer had told me he liked). Day two and three he was either in behind the TV stand or on top of the bookcase, and quite hissy!

Our previous cat was a lap cat from day one so I was really worried and actually messaged the rescue - the lady said he had been the exact same in foster care for the first few days. Day four I bribed him with some tinned tuna, and day five I had to go into work and could tell he was happy to see me when I got home. It probably took about three or four months for him to really settle and be “our cat”, but now he really is - ten months on and he’s a happy, friendly, cuddly boy who bosses us around and rules the house!

Oh, and I took it as a good sign he “hid in plain sight” in the living room rather than eg the spare bedroom.

Absolutely normal - but where's the cat tax photo?

Thanks chaps.. she has ventured out briefly this evening, but not wanting to leave the dining room area. She is currently under the clothes drier now by the radiator 😊

Cat tax picture attached..she is very sweet!

I foster cats one of mine didn’t come out for a week, and didn’t leave the room she was set up in for maybe 3 weeks even though the door was open. She never ventured downstairs in the 2 months I had her, luckily she got rehomed to a flat! Just make sure she’s got a room set up for just her so she can decompress and find her feet, rescue cats have been through a lot and passed around so she’s just got to settle in, just google 3,3,3 cat rule 😊

She’s lovely! Funnily enough I put a cat bed by the radiator in the kitchen and our boy moved it underneath the clothes airer. He’s shut in the kitchen at night (because he’s a massive pest at 5am looking for breakfast) and has the choice of clothes horse cave, my work chair with a blanket on it, his cat tree, or an Amazon box on top of the fridge-freezer to sleep.

One of mine jumped out the carrier, onto the kitchen worktop, marched around, declared the place suitable and went and found the bed and fell asleep... he's been in love with my husband ever since!

The other took 24 hours to leave his box, spent another 12 hours hiding in the litter box and was kept in one room for 2 weeks, so by his standards your pretty pretty girl is doing well!

deathofadiscodancer888 · 23/02/2025 15:30

Thanks! She seems a bit less nervy today, and has even braved the upstairs!

Looking forward to a few weeks time when she can explore the garden..think she is going to love it!
