Despairing over getting wet food my 3 month old kittens will eat

They are litter mates and are healthy.
So far I have a subscription to untamed- that is hit and miss as to whether they will eat it- and bloody expensive.
tried all sorts of wet kitten food from the cheap to the expensive. Some days they’ll eat a bit- other days will walk away.
i sometimes cook them white fish and chicken breast.
They happily eat their kitten kibble - royal canine.
at the point of trying some adult cat food.
Anyone else got bloody fussy kittens!

My cat had never eaten wet food. Like you I tried them all and she turned her nose up at all of them. She’s 4 now and is in good health so I don’t think it’s dine her any harm. And it’s definitely less smelly!

biscuitsandbooks · 17/02/2025 08:29

Are they male or female?

I wouldn't be so worried about females on a dry only diet but it can be a real issue for male cats and can lead to blockages long term. Have you tried them on things like cat soup?

BigButtons · 17/02/2025 09:06

2 female and one male.
I have a cat mate fountain which they use regularly.
they always seem really keen when I put the plates of wet down and seem to want it but then turn their noses up or only eat a bit.
I am feeding them 3-4 small wet meals a day and free feeding them kibble.
maybe they are just not that hungry.🤷🏻‍♀️
lots of poos in the litter trays and lots of wees and they are growing so quickly.
they are full of mischief and Energy.
my last cat had to be put down eventually due to increasing blocked bladder issues. He was in a huge amount of distress.
I am very glad to see the boy cat especially use the fountain a lot.
Maybe I am worrying over nothing. I have had kittens before but I don’t think they had kitten specific wet food.
would it do any harm to try them on some 1+ cat food?

One of my dcat won't touch wet food, no matter the brand. The other is obsessed by it.
I think dry kibble is way more convenient so wouldn't stress it personally

Our boy is just past two and not that fussed about wet food. We've tried them all from super cheap (we adopted him at a year old and he was being fed Whiskas in foster care) to fancy-pants (Untamed/Katkin) and everything in between. He does okay with Sheba, and gets a 50g pouch twice a day, plus good quality biscuits. Some days he will eat the whole pouch, others he'll eat about half of it, he always eats all the biscuits.

He does like the little tuna tins of Encore and Untamed, which are pretty much like human tins I would use to make eg tuna mayo, but he won't eat that two days in a row, so gets it once a week or so. (But if I was to make a tuna sandwich right now he would steal it from my hand - what a boy.) Chicken Untamed tins were rejected, but if I cook some chicken for him or give him bits from a roast he wolfs that down.

Our previous cat was a gannet and licked her plate clean right away so I found it really disconcerting, but I think he's just not a wet food kinda guy! He drinks plenty, so hopefully that's enough for his water-works to stay healthy. For an ex stray he is a fussy little monkey.

biscuitsandbooks · 17/02/2025 09:25

How old are they? We always fed adult only food from about six months.

BigButtons · 17/02/2025 09:48

@biscuitsandbooks about 3.5 months.
@Judystilldreamsofhorses I know! I mean what is is it with the human food stealing? Eat my chicken and fish but not the stuff I cook them. They even try and eat my buttered toast.
sometimes one of them will immediately reject their food and then go and steal the food from the next plate - which is exactly the same food.🤷🏻‍♀️

It's fine to just give them kibble as long as they are drinking enough water

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2025 13:15

Penelope is the first of all of mine to eat wet food. The others wouldn't touch it. Just make sure they have plenty of water.

BigButtons · 17/02/2025 14:32

Thanks all for you reassurances. They have a cat fountain which they drink from a lot- particularly the boy after he has had some kibble- which I am relived about.
time to pause the untamed order then and save myself some £££££

My kittens like the Scrumbles wet food tins. Not sure they are kitten specific but the breeder had them on it so we have just continued. There is meat in jelly, chicken in juice and and a pate one. They like them all!
They have dry for 2 meals and a tin with a tiny sprinkle of dry for their tea.

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 17/02/2025 18:24

They probably are not hungry. Try taking the dry food away for a few days. They'll eat the wet if hungry.

Tabbsi · 17/02/2025 22:38

Mine go mad for the Purina gourmet revelations mousses, they look ridiculously extravagant which makes me laugh when I serve them. Have you tried those?

I haven’t tried those. The reflected the expensive royal canine mother and kitten mouses. I wasn’t sure if it was the texture of the taste that was the issue 🤷🏻‍♀️

My cat is not fussy, but my vet recommended that I mainly feed her dry kibble. It is nutrient dense and good for their teeth. I only use wet food to hide her medication in.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 18/02/2025 06:17

My cats ate Royal Canin indoor exclusively from age 1. My girl cat had to be PTS recently but she was 15 and my boy is still going strong at 14. We’ve recently introduced some wet for him, really to cheer him up!

TuesdayRubies · 18/02/2025 06:25

Mine love Sheba and Gourmet from Sainsbury's but assume you've tried?

TuesdayRubies · 18/02/2025 06:25

But for female cats don't worry too much. Vet told me dry food is best for teeth.

BigButtons · 18/02/2025 10:16

Interesting re dry food. You hear so much conflicting advice regarding wet vs dry.
They hated Sheba kitten- gotta admit that it looked and smelt rank!
The boy is due his jabs and check up this week so I shall ask them and then ask again next week when the girls go for theirs.
One girl is actually quite greedy- she will eat all the left overs. I will have to watch her in the future.
Her sister is a little scrap and hardly eats- but she has a lot of energy.
The big bowl of royal canine kibble is eaten up every day.
They have already had 2 breakfasts of a little bit of wet- which they ate all up today. that was a surprise.
Some days they won’t touch it at all.
Maybe they will always be fussy things.
My last cat loved his wet food so it is a bit of a learning curve .
after the trauma of his illness I must be over compensating and worrying.
I am an experienced cat owner and my last 2 were also kittens.
You forget so much each time though and the cat and each cat is so different and feeding landscape seems to change dramatically every time I have a new cat! ( but like with babies!)
