Poorly kitten

Have had my two kittens for just over 6 weeks. One of them hasn't eaten since Wednesday night. He seemed OK yesterday but overnight he's got worse. He vomited green liquid in the middle of the night and this morning is very lethargic. Won't really move and is just whimpering when we give him some love. He hasn't eaten or drank for certain since 4pm yesterday. I'm really worried and just need a handhold or some positive stories. Will phone the vet the moment they open today. I'm just worried as he isn't even registered there yet as we've had him such short time (he was vaccinated/neutered at the rescue centre). Does anyone know what could be the cause? He only started going out last weekend and hasn't been madly keen so maybe only been out 15 mins a day.

You need to ring the vet as an emergency - now. Poor thing should have been seen yesterday.

100% agree.

This isn’t one of those time you wait two hours for your normal vet. Your kitten should have been seen yesterday.

Icequeen01 · 14/02/2025 07:23

Totally agree with previous posters. This kitten should have been seen yesterday. They can go down so quickly when they are kittens. The poor thing was whimpering - I'm not sure it could have told you any more clearly that it's very poorly.

Agree with the other posters - ring the vet now. Just ring the nearest vet line and it will either put you through to the emergency vet or have a recording with the phone number

Our wee kitten was very poorly about 4 weeks after we got her, didn’t eat etc was touch and go with her and was so worrying we did emergency vet, she wasn’t registered either, her insurance waiting period was that day too so she wasn’t covered but thankfully once she’d been seen and stayed in the vet hospital for 24 hours she was ok, she lost loads of weight, she is small anyway, it doesn’t take much, they compensate too so seem not too bad when actually they are really pooorly. It’s awful and I hope you’re little kitten is ok,

yogakeepsmesane · 14/02/2025 07:33

Thank you for the quick replies. He's 10 months old so not tiny which is why when he was off his food yesterday similar posts I read on here told me see how he went as he was fine in himself. Just since the early hours, after he was sick that he's gone quiet. Think I've given the wrong impression of the whimpering in my panic! It's more sad mews, than a painful cry. We're off to the vet shortly...

The advice to watch and wait is for adult cats who are generally fine in themselves but have had a one-off vomit or runny poo - not for kittens who haven't eaten in over 24 hours and who are clearly unwell.

He sounds very sick - hopefully he's okay.

DinoLil · 14/02/2025 08:09

Good luck!

I brought my dog home yesterday from 48hrs at the vet hospital with the same symptoms. Turns out she'd swallowed a tiny bone shard snaffling something from somewhere.

On Wednesday morning, the vet was on the verge of pts but luckily, she rallied.

She's on a huge array of medication, eating now but little and often.

It's so important to get your pet seen ASAP as they go downhill very quickly.

Alwaystired23 · 14/02/2025 08:49

I think cats can mask illness, so if your kitten is showing signs of being unwell, he must be really ill. I agree with others you need to ring the emergency vet now. I hope he's ok.

louderthan · 14/02/2025 18:49

How is he OP?

potatopaws · 14/02/2025 21:53

How’s your wee kitten @yogakeepsmesane?

yogakeepsmesane · 15/02/2025 11:43

Sorry I'm late replying. He's on the mend. Think it was just an upset tummy. He's eating little and often and going to the loo so vet happy he is on the mend. Thanks for your concern.

For those saying the OP should have gone to the emergency vet. It's around £300 just to be seen. I don't think it's unreasonable to wait until morning. Unless they are very unwell. Or a tiny kitten.

Not all emergency vets rip you off like that. Ours doesn't charge any extra to see you OOH - you just pay their normal prices whether it's 7pm or 2am.

And OP was describing an unwell kitten, IMO. A cat who isn't eating, drinking or moving, and whimpers when touched needs to be seen as an emergency.
