15 ye old cat vomiting not kidney, thyroid or diabetes

I have a 15yr old cat who has been treated for a virus that makes him cough with antibiotics when it flares up for the last 2 years. The Vet took cultures from his lungs but the results were inconclusive so we agreed on antibiotics when he needed them.

He had a flare up of the cough recently that also seemed to be accompanied by vomiting and drinking lots of water so we went back to the vets. They did bloods and ruled out anything wrong with his kidneys, thyroid and he's not diabetic. They prescribed antibiotics for 2 weeks and in that time everything cleared up apart from he was sick a couple of times. 2 weeks post meds and the vomiting is back and he sometimes coughs straight after.

He seems hungry but won't touch wet food at the moment. He'll eat dry but guzzles water straight after and vomits it all back up. I tried him with some ham earlier but that didn't even hit his stomach before it came straight back up. I'm obviously going to take him back to the vet but would be interested to hear if anything has experienced similar with their cat? I was convinced the bloods were going to show something but seems not.

There is a vet group on Facebook that are good at suggesting tests to ask for hang on

Sowewenttothestation · 10/02/2025 17:49

I can't remember exactly how we worked it out because it was a few years ago now but we switched our elderly cat to satiety version of his normal food and it helped enormously. He had three meals a day too and that also helped. We had spent a fortune on tests and the vet wasn't sure why it worked but it did. He lived to 22, so it was worthwhile!

Also my cat went through a phase of eating drinking and puking I had him sedated and scoped his tonsils were enlarged they think he might have got something hooked in his throat and the vomiting cleared it leaving him with a very sore throat he was good after anti inflation meds anti nausea meds and about a weeks worth of metacam

@Theunamedcat thank you, I've asked to join that group. Glad your cat got better, it's really puzzling me so good to hear some suggestions.

@Sowewenttothestation can you remember what food you switched to. They are getting fussier as they get older but this one is usually mad for wet food.

What about an abdominal ultrasound?

Just don't forget to start your question with "hello vets" they get really ANAL about it

Theunamedcat · 10/02/2025 18:20

He got better but randomly puked today and I'm paranoid is it a hairball? Has he found plastic? Is he ill again? I think he just ate too fast but he went and stood by his brother to be sick his brother spat his biscuits out and walked away in disgust 😬

I THINK this is him he is pretty identical to one of his brothers though so it's hard to tell three black cats in one house

Does the cat go outdoors? Has it been wormed recently? One of ours was a bit like this until they threw up a 30cm tapeworm. Totally gross.

@Theunamedcat handsome boy! I love all back cats

@Lunde that's interesting as I realised today they are overdue to be worked so I've ordered some which will be here tomorrow.

@Leeds157 the vet said that if it came back the next step would be x-ray. Im assuming anything would should up on both an ultrasound or x-ray?

@Gobolino80 yes that's my thinking, that a scan would be good at actually looking at what's going on, hope you get to the bottom of it soon x

In my unfortunate experience they will suggest an x-ray which is more expensive than an ultrasound blockages show up on an xray better I was fortunate that he didn't need one his brother had a belly ultrasound once they SHAVED him he was so ashamed! But his belly felt all fuzzy for weeks so we kept tickling it 😂

Our girl cat was vomiting a lot last year. We had her back and forth a few times and they were never fussed because she was otherwise completely fine, eating like a horse, no weight loss, catching mice, racing around. When it got more frequent I pushed for further tests and unfortunately she had intestinal lymphoma - both our own vet and the specialist vet were gobsnacked as she had no other symptoms, but it is apparently very common. She was only ten and it was a horrible shock.

It's probably nothing in your cat, but I am glad I trusted my instincts and pushed as eventually she would have really gone downhill and suffered. We had x-rays, ultrasounds, and then a CT scan at a specialist place - it was only at the CT that the mass showed. Bloods were completely clear.

We now have a little two-year-old boy cat who often eats grass/wolfs his food and pukes. I spiral wildly every time.

I'm fairly sure it was the Royal Canin one. It does say it's for weight loss but we just gave enough that he didn't.

@Theunamedcat I used to love stroking Magics bald chest and tummy after her heart scans. It was like peach fuzz.
