I rehomed a cat a few months ago. He’s adorable but his fur has exploded since he settled in. When I first got him he “seemed” to be short haired. Turns out he’s not he is very fluffy with an excellent mane.
How do I groom him? Also how often do I cut his claws?
Thank you

He's adorable! I don't have much advice, my hairy cats aren't quite the same but I have a proper cat brush and I do them ad hoc. My newest cat hated it so I do it gently when she is eating her treats to get her used to it, I think you might want to do similar to build up and then do a regular brush to prevent mats building up. My top tip is brush outside when possible! I've never cut my cats claws, they sort them out themselves, just keep an eye on what their preferences are and focus on providing something that suits them (flat/upright)

He’s so handsome! I brush our (also orange) boy every night - he loves it and comes to get me if I am late. We alternate between a wiry brush and a silicone one, the wiry one collects the hair into a sort of “disk” you pop out.

Our previous cat was as long haired as a short haired cat could be, and also pure white so a disaster for dark clothes. She used to get brushed daily too but got bored very quickly.

I wouldn’t even like to think about trimming nails.

My medium hair got fluffier as he got older too! Don’t worry about his nails, just make sure he has a few scratching posts around the house and he’ll sort them himself. We brush him most days- easier to brush the cat than all the furniture.

What a beaut. He shouldn't need nail clipping, just have plenty of scratching posts around. You can get adhesive surfaces to protect furniture if he prefers a chair back or similar.

I brush one of mine every few days for a few mins. The other is long haired too but it's much finer and he won't tolerate brushing, he fights with any brush we try. Very cute but not helpful for his hairballs. Little and often is probably good to aim for.

Thank you all. I must admit I do 😍him. Any recommendations for brushes please? Looked on Amazon but there are a lot of different types

We've got one like this but it might not be enough for that fur! We love it though. I've had my eye on the one referenced above by @Judystilldreamsofhorses where the disc pops out but am skeptical of whether it could take the thickness of our cats fur so interested to see what others say about it

We comb our long haired cat and sometimes use a knot cutter when he has matts. We have a furminator as well, which cuts down on the drifting fur. He looks after his own claws - he has a tall scratching post (Amazon basics) that he can really stretch up and shred.
