Housecat with diarrhoea

We have a 4 year old British Short Hair. She’s a housecat- by choice, we have a cat flap but she never goes out. Our two other cats do, however.

Yesterday morning I was in the bathroom and saw her use the litter tray. It looked a bit soft. Later afternoon, there was an awful stench in the bathroom- it looked like there was a ball of wee in the tray, but when I cleaned it up it was actually poo.

And now, 24 hours after that, there was another almighty smell. In the tray there was what looked like a cow pat, spread over half the tray (so it must have been a bit explosive coming out).

Sorry for the graphic descriptions :/

Anyway, I have no idea what could have caused this. Her diet has not changed, and she is still wanting food.

Should I stop food for the next 24 hours? If it happens again I’ll take her to the vets on Monday.

I wouldn't stop her food, I would just see how she goes over the weekend. My cats have all had this over the years and it's always cleared up with time.

One of my cats get like that after she’s managed to get hold of a bit of cheese, do you have kids who drop food on the floor when eating? I wouldn’t worry yet see how she is in a day or two.

Thanks. Been totally fine today so far 🤞

Yes we do… didn’t even think of that! It’s actually quite likely this is what happened! She’s a bit of a piglet and will eat anything

Glad it's sorted. For future, it it continues for a few days you can use Pro-Kolin to help with firmer stools. It's key to avoid dehydration so you can mix water into wet food and gives treats like Lick e Lix. If it didn't clear up in a few days or there were other symptoms I'd do vet.

Another explosion this morning. Vets had no appointments but I’ve gone and picked up
some medicine for her. Fingers crossed this works!

I had one like this. I had to put on a low protein diet, couldn't eat biscuits the minute she did it was terrible.

biscuitsandbooks · 10/02/2025 13:11

Hope she's feeling better soon and it's just something she ate 🤞

I agree with the PP who recommended ProKolin too - it's saved us a fortune over the years!

Another two episodes this morning. This afternoon she vomited up a huge furball.

Could this have been causing it?

I‘ve been off work the past few days so have been able to deal with it immediately (it being the mess in the tray and all over her backside). I‘m working tomorrow, currently debating if locking her in the bathroom will do more harm than good. I don’t want to really stress her out and make it worse. But I also don’t want shit all over my (open plan) house 😩

My girl developed this at age 4, she became intolerant to her food. I switched to sensitive and have to be super careful about what she has! Worth looking into. I feel your pain, mine is a long haired to add insult to injury, it was everywhere!

biscuitsandbooks · 11/02/2025 17:27

Is she the nervous type? One of mine can't cope being shut in anywhere but the others would be fine as long as they had a cosy bed to sleep in.

I hope you get some answers soon.

SailorCentral · 11/02/2025 17:59

Thanks for all the help. I‘ve had a look at pro kolin- she’s been given something called pro-enteric from the vets, I‘m not sure if it’s the same stuff?

I‘ll look into some sensitive food too.

She‘s definitely the nervous type, she hates being alone. If I lock her in tomorrow I know she‘ll cry and cry until I come home 😔

@InglouriousBasterd We also have a persian, I am feeling very grateful it isn’t him with the squits!!

I wonder whether there's a bug doing the rounds. All four of ours (three Persians, 1 long haired moggie) have had upset tummies this week, as has the dog. No change in diet and 2 of the cats normally have robust tummies - as does the dog.
