Worm pill that cats don't spot

CatLady476 · 02/02/2025 17:06

At wits end ,- cat always spots worming pill in food. Tried grinding it up, doing half at a time, hiding in fishy food, hiding in Lick e lix. Are there any worming pills that are tasteless?

Could you use a spot on wormer instead?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/02/2025 17:13

Wrap it in a ball of cheese.
You have to completely surround it in a strong cheese. Failing that it's force feed the cat the tablet I'm afraid (sans the cheese of course).
I think you can get nape of the neck worm treatment but iirc it's not as effective or long lasting as the tablet

ExtraDisorganised · 02/02/2025 17:13

I just open their mouths and throw it in, it took quite a lot of practice but is easy peasy now.

PineappleCoconut · 02/02/2025 17:14

Or wrap it in cat meat flavoured pill putty. You can get it at the vets or from Amazon. Even my pill hating monster manages them that way. The other is a good girl who swallows anything willingly.

PineappleCoconut · 02/02/2025 17:14

Meat flavoured for cats
Not cat-meat flavour Blush

Agree.
This is what i do.
Hold by the scruff of the neck and be prepared for them to make a run for it.
Carefully but quickly pop the tablet in.
If you do it quickly and don’t faff about they won’t know what’s hit them

If you have more than one cat don’t let the others see what you’re up to, the others will make a run for the cat flap 😆

WonderingWanda · 02/02/2025 17:20

Mine just eats his. I think it's called milbemax and it is the same colour as dreamies. I suspect my cat is just greedy though.

biscuitsandbooks · 03/02/2025 08:07

We use liquid wormer - Panacur. Either add it to their food or squirt it straight into their mouths.

I tried that once and was triumphant at getting the pill in.

The next day, I found the pill lying on the floor. My cat had held it in his mouth and spat it out while I wasn't looking.

Snozzlemaid · 03/02/2025 08:14

My vet prescribes a spot on one that is applied to the back of her neck, just like the flea one.

Pigeonqueen · 03/02/2025 08:17

I wrap one in a little bit of ham and then give him this and then have another bit of ham ready to go straight after this that he can see so he chomps the first bit down. He is very greedy though!

One of mine is adept at that. So once it's gone in I either give her a few dreamies in a tiny dish and watch her eat them, or just lift her chin up to keep her mouth closed with a finger and watch her swallow. Always do it somewhere in a clear space that you would see a tablet that has been spat out. Not on the sofa where it could fall down a gap or similar.

I agree with not letting other cats see it happening, I swoop for mine and take them to the kitchen to be tabletted when the other one isn't watching.

Bah! Was going to attach my favorite "Giving the Cat a Pill" here, but MN doesn't seem to want me to attach anything?

dementedpixie · 03/02/2025 18:12

Think you can't attach photos after issues with photos posted last night/overnight

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 03/02/2025 18:20

I really don’t see why you would try to pill a non-compliant cat when there are perfectly good spot-ons available. There are always going to be times when pills are medically necessary - I‘d rather reserve the suffering (cat and us) for that and nothing else. Cat is an expert non-swallower and pill detector in pill pockets, cheese, ham etc so we do a two person technique with a ‘pill injector’ device and the second person stroking his throat to encourage him to swallow.

ExtraDisorganised · 03/02/2025 22:52

Ours are not suited to spot-ons, ome of them has a skin condition which flares up at that part of her neck and the other one is far more non-compliant with spot-ons compared to tablets, it used to be a complete nightmare getting them on her (also not sure how well they worked as she has extremely thick fur) so they have a monthly flea tablet and a quarterly worm one.

Pixiedust1234 · 03/02/2025 23:03

Spot ons require the cat to be facing the right way. Ours is always on her side.

Tablets require no sense of smell or taste, or a greedy cat. Ours only eats biscuits or deamies. Wet food, ham, cheesespread, lickie lix are despised. This means the liquid one is also out.

Force feeding requires a cat who is okay with being picked up and doesn't respond in either full panic mode where she ends up panting, or a snarly ferocious set of sharp teeth.

Anyone have a link to their tastiest pill pocket we could try please?

Herbologistinwaiting · 03/02/2025 23:16

Milpro I think it’s called. Our cat will not swallow anything I give her except food. She is extremely suspicious. However she will just eat these tablets herself if I put one on the floor for her. The vet did it in front of me once. I couldn’t believe it.

Yeah that’s what we have too. Lasts 3 months.

CatLady476 · 06/02/2025 06:27

There's some good options here, folks. Thanks. Cat also hates spot on treatments and will bite anyone who tries! It's not easy....

That's interesting. Do you have to wrap it inside ham or do you just plonk it on the floor like a dreamie?

Not need to wrap it in anything. You can put it on your palm and let your cat eat it. It’s amazingly easy.

Me too as my girl just sucks the cheese off it and spits out the pill.
