4 cats, should I get another puppy is it fair on them?

I used to have 3 cats, only had a crabby 14 year old tabby left when we got Ddog, when she arrived tabby boy very quickly informed her who was boss and she was always terrified of cats. He passed seat 3 years later and about 6 months after that we got 2 kittens. She was always scared of them too which was funny considering she was a very large dog, they always wanted to cuddle and play and she would give them side eye. We got another two cats and she would begrudgingly allow one to sleep next to her on my bed and they all kind of got along. She very sadly died last year.

Dcats range from 6 to 3 now. I would love another dog but is it fair on them to bring a crazy puppy into their home (they are all indoor cats), it could go two ways they may be like my old cat and wallop the puppy and put it in its place or more likely be terrified of it and hide away. Puppies are chaos and cats just love peace and quiet.

Another option would be another kitten (or two) and just be a crazy cat household (rescues of course) kittens as the others would accept them more easily. The last one got accepted straight away they were more interested in eating the kitten food.

I’m so torn, I’d love a dog I miss having a dog but I don’t want to upset my cats.

It sounds like the current cats are all used to bossing a dog around, so it could work OK.

sweetkitty · 29/01/2025 00:08

@Ellmau thats the thing they aren’t though they only know DDog who was scared of them and stayed out their way. It was nothing they did. It was all old cat. They are actually a lovely friendly bunch.

A neighbour has 2 cats, and had an elderly dog. She then got a couple of (small breed) puppies, which didn't impress the cats. Sine the elderly dog has now passed on, the cats have basically moved out and only seem to come home to eat as they can't tolerate the bouncy little dogs.

What is poor about the cats? They're in a loving home and their owner is clearly thinking about what is best for them. Weird comment.

I also agree a puppy could possibly be a bad idea and I wouldn't take the chance in case it didn't work out. Would an older dog, who already gets along with cats, be an option?

We have three cats and a dog - never had any issues but our cats do go outside which I think makes a big difference.

@Game0fCrones i can assure you the cats are not poor, they are very spoiled and much loved members of my family. I’m totally thinking about their welfare before rushing in and getting a puppy.

We used to have another dog visit, he was really placid and didn’t bother with the cats either, they used to lie beside him and not bother with him. I think they would expect all dogs to be like this not a mad pup. If they would be like old cat and whack pup on face show it who was boss they would probably get along fine. The younger two actually wanted to cuddle with DDog and would give her cat boofs it’s just that she would freak out.

As much as I’d love another dog, existing cats come first.

I had 2 adult male cats when I got my puppy 8 and 5 ). The 8 year old gas always enjoyed cuddling with him but the 5 year old hated him ( feliway really helps ) it's been 3 years now, got 2 more kittens and they all plod along nicely. Cat who doesn't like him will sometimes sit with him but mainly just ignores him.

Think he just doesn't like babies though as he hated the kittens until they grew up too

Getting a „crazy puppy“ could lead to one or some of the cats starting to pee or poop outside the litter tray. I wouldn‘t get another dog.
