What has happened to Felix pouches?

ThatsWhatImTalkinAbout · 27/01/2025 14:01

Yesterday was shopping day and picked up my usual box of Felix 7 yrs+ for the cat and realised the box was more slimline than normal but still £5.00 for 12.
Got home, plonked the new box next to my near-empty box only to realised I thought I’d only bought half the usual amount. Checked the box, still 12 pouches but the weight per pouch has reduced from 100g to 85g but still charged £5.00!!
I’m already struggling to stretch out one box per week for my cat. There is no way I’ll be able to stretch this for one week. That’s just doubled the cost for as I’ll need to buy 2 boxes now. Fuming.😤

The only dry food our outdoor farm cats will eat is Amazons own brand dry food. Slightly weird choice on their part but I'm grateful as it comes in 15kg bags. That and cat crack obviously. You could give it a try in the smaller versions.

You should be feeding 2/3 pouches a day anyway, personally mine have felix mixed with either minced beef or chicken, and then cat it biscuits on the side.

Bulks it out nicely.

There's absolutely no need to be feeding three pouches a day.

Mine get one pouch each plus dry. No way on this planet am I spending almost £5 a day to feed three cats 😂

JonathanGirl · 28/01/2025 07:58

I’m annoyed by this too. My cat has two Felix pouches a day plus dry food.
He loves his Felix, so I don’t really want to sub in more dry, plus wet food is better for him than dry because of some previous health issues.

I have had him on tinned food before, ordered online, but it just went straight through him, and he mainly just licked off the jelly anyway. Felix worked much better for us, because he will actually eat it.

I don’t mind so much about the cost, and it’s only an extra third of a pouch every day, but it means I will have to have opened pouches permanently hanging round in the fridge, and he’s fussy and will turn up his nose at fridge-cold food.

Nobody forced you to get three cats. One pouch a day is not enough.

biscuitsandbooks · 28/01/2025 07:59

@JonathanGirl we end up with half a pouch left over in the mornings and just keep it in the cupboard - it's fine until the next meal.

fingertraps · 28/01/2025 08:00

I thought the box seemed smaller but didn’t twig they’d actually changed the pouches. No wonder our cat has been going through more of them - we thought he was just having a greedy patch!

Really irritating. Our cat is 13 and has AGAL. Not about to try to change his food at this age.

@fingertraps I'm well aware nobody forced me to get three cats.

But that doesn't change the fact that cats do not need 3-4 pouches of food a day. Mine are all active, go outside and probably supplement with mice or whatever - they get a pouch per day plus dry and have no issues on that diet. None of them are overweight.

However the oldest was overweight when w rescued him and his previous owner gave him three pouches a day which he absolutely did not need. He ended up with arthritis unfortunately.

My cats get one pouch each plus dry food - its absolutely plenty!

Workisntworking · 28/01/2025 08:12

My fat cat is on one pouch per day plus some dry food.
Please no one tell her that some cats are getting many multiples of this!

MrsJamin · 28/01/2025 08:13

I've no idea why people buy pouches, why not buy tinned food so you can recycle the containers? I doubt pouches are ever recycled no matter where you send them.

brummumma · 28/01/2025 08:14

I've noticed that my cats still seem starving if I give them an 85g pouch so they also probably have cheaper Ingredients/ bulked out with more jelly/gravy too

I buy a box of 40 Felix ocean feast and that usually last about a week for 3 cats

I don't really count how many pouches per day they have - the annual weigh in at the vets hasn't highlighted any of them are overweight

My cat is too! This was on the advice of the vet because she carries a bit of weight around her tummy.
She is a little partial to a tiny bit of bacon or sausage when I cook some up at the weekend!

We can save our soft plastics etc and take them to our large supermarket, so all of our pouches are rinsed out and sent off with that recycling.

I suspect most cat owners buy what's affordable and what their cats will eat, rather than because of the packaging.

I've tried mine on several tinned foods before and none of them got eaten.

Mine would be furious if they knew other cats were getting 4+ pouches a day 😂

Outside of kittenhood, one pouch a day is the most any of my cats have ever had - it's just not remotely necessary to give more, especially if you also feed dry and your cats go out to hunt.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 27/01/2025 16:53

Mine actually only have two pouches a day plus either steak mince or roast chicken and then biscuits.

One of mine had FIP and I had to feed her anything and everything so she’d gain weight while she was being treated. And now it’s stuck. They love their beef mince and their chicken occasionally I swap the chicken for turkey or turkey mince.

One likes sardines and tuna and such but the other one doesn’t.

I bought some of those extortionately expensive little tins (can’t remember what brand) and the one refused to touch them. Ditto felix.

I refuse to shell out for the likes of Katkin because A, it’s extortionately expensive and I’ve read too many horror stories of people being unable to cancel their orders, and B, I’ve seen how they come across on social media and they’re completely condescending.

Cheap cat food is a false economy. I switched from felix to katkin. I was feeding 5 to 6 pouches of felix per day (£2.08 for 5 felix pouches if you get the 12 pack, £1.87 if you get the 40 packs) plus dry food between and he was still hungry. Katkin is £2.25 per day and no biscuits needed.

biscuitsandbooks · 28/01/2025 08:49

@rainbowstardrops it's only a false economy if your cat will actually eat the Katkin though!

Plus many people don't give anything close to 5-6 pouches a day - they do one or two and top up with a high protein dry, which is much, much cheaper.

I don't think you meant to tag me in that because I agree with you. My cat is a fussy mare and probably wouldn't eat Katkins (or anything else for that matter!)

Thanks for this and similar posts from PPs, I was beginning to wonder if I was starving my cat!

She gets 1 sachet (of Felix because she is addicted and won't touch the premium stuff 🙄) and always has James Welbeloved biscuits. Plus a few meat or fish treats from the human dinners.

She is fine but not slim! She used to have 2 pouches (85 grams) a day and she was visibly fatter so I reduced it.

Goodweekincoming · 28/01/2025 09:11

BigDahliaFan · 27/01/2025 14:23

Yes our cat pointed this out. He's a very large cat (not fat) and eats 6 sachets a day....he's now on 7.

7 pouches a day????

biscuitsandbooks · 28/01/2025 09:16

Sorry @rainbowstardrops I meant to tag @Alternativetolove - that serves me right for multi-tasking 😂

Sunshineandrainbow · 28/01/2025 09:16

I don't feed Felix but noticed a group on Facebook called 'Cats Recently Affected By Felix Food' which might interest people.

I supplement cheap sheba with good quality purizon biscuits.

Also recently found Tilly and ted in Asda and he likes this as it's pate texture.

Goodweekincoming · 28/01/2025 09:11

Yes. We try to restrict it to 5 or 6. He's not fat. He's a big lad. It's regularly commented on by people.

Because my cats would rather starve than eat most tinned food. I hate the plastic waste but I have to feed them!
