Struggling with new cat

This is day 2, the first day she was very quiet but now she is meowing most of the night. I shut my bedroom door and she is meowing at it throughout the night. I feel as though she is intolerant to wet food but she won’t eat her kibble. She has been purring and doing biscuits on my chest this morning but then goes back to pacing and meowing again. She has fresh water, food down and fresh litter box. Her poo is also slightly mucusy

How old is she? Is she neutered?
It sounds pretty normal for only the second day. A new environment and people. Having an upset stomach is pretty usual for cats in a new home, it usually settles within a few days. If not, you can get a paste to help. Could you leave your bedroom door open at night?

How old is she?
The poo is probably a reaction to different food and should settle down. The meowing is because she's new and it's all weird and she wants you.

She is 3 yrs old. Yes she has been neutered. I could open my bedroom door but I’m not sure if she would feel more relaxed or just meow in here too

Well there's only one way to find out! Poor thing is bound to feel a bit discombobulated. Our rescue cat hid away for the first few days.

She is. She came in with her sister but her sister was adopted before her. She had been at the rescue for a couple of months. Her previous owner had to move home and apparently couldn’t take pets so they gave them up to the rescue.

Leave your door open tonight & see if that makes a difference.

Are you giving her the same food she had at the rescue?

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/01/2025 07:09

Poor little thing lost her home and family's then was separated from her sister and left in a rescue centre for a couple of months, then a random stranger has taken her to an unfamiliar house. She's only been with you a day and a bit she needs time to figure out if you and her new home are OK, and to get used to the new sights, smells, foods etc.

She sounds very stressed. She needs reassurance from you not a closed door.

Yes the same wet food, they gave me a bag of Purina kibble but she won’t eat it. I’d left some out over night but she hadn’t touched it so I put down some wet this morning and she had a few mouthfuls of that but I’m wondering if it doesn’t agree with her because of the mucusy poo and she did have a bit of gas

Well done OP for taking in the kitty and asking for help in here. These early days days will be tough for you both. The cat will be scared and she’ll also be picking up in your nerves. She needs reassurance, lots of fuss and attention, and she’ll soon settle.

FedupMumof10YearOld · 27/01/2025 07:15

I'd open the door.

My beloved girl cat (RIP) meowed at the door - she wanted to come in.

From the beginning we had to leave all doors open.

I don't think you're struggling with having a cat, I think you mean you're struggling to interpret what the meows mean.

My boy cat, can't be bothered to meow so just sits outside the door waiting for it to be opened. He can wait all night.

Each one has its own personality and ways of doing things. Just like us 😁

Ok, for some context one of my rescue cats hid under a cupboard for 2 weeks when we first brought her home. She didn't sit on anyone for 2 years! Cats do not like change (in general, there are always exceptions)
She's had an enormous amount of upheaval over the last couple of months, she will be scared and stressed. Be patient, it can take weeks or months for a cat to settle.
stick with the same food if it's what she is used to at least for a couple of months, then you can gradually change it if it's not suiting her any more.

Ooh lovely little void 😘

Looks like she's doing OK there - ON the bed rather than under it at this stage is really good going! Mine managed to hide inside the covers of the sofa for days when they first came home!

I would guess she wanted company last night, and to be fair it was great that she went to you for that comfort. Give her a good couple of weeks to settle down properly, use a Feliway or similar plug in, make sure she has plenty of kibble and water down at all times.

And have patience - won't be long before she is ruling the house with a paw of iron in a velvet glove!

Kitty979 · 27/01/2025 07:30

Has anyone tried feliway?
