Cat suddenly doing meercat stretching

KatyMac · 20/01/2025 18:08

We have a Siamese/Siamese Cross since 2021

She is about 4

She occasionally has weeing incidents (usually DH's pillow) which were investigated and everything was clear

Recently (since christmas) she has been rearing up onto a meercat position in a sort of massive stretch

I wondered if it was a behavioural thing? Does anyone know

Ours dances on his hind legs, waving his arms - he does it when he wants snacks or you to do something for him! (Usually by the kitchen bin which is next to his cupboard.)

Omg the cuteness!!! 😍

My own cat ruler is very cute, affectionate, communicative and she can do a few clever party tricks. I'm usually very proud of her, but now I want one that meerkats and dances!

He’s a wee smasher, isn’t he? 🧡🐈

I keep telling myself I won't be getting another cat now last one has gone, then I see pictures like those, what a little love he is 😃😺

Such gorgeous photos!

Feral cats (and domestic) stand up on their hind legs to make themselves look more intimidating when they are fighting or play fighting. Is she scared or stressed when she does it or playing? Could the weeing have been stress related?

Domestic cats sometimes do it as they have learnt it gets them up to treat and snuggle giving hand height or it gets them attention or for a better view of interesting places like the sofa or coffee table 😂 Judy’s little fella is a happy, relaxed little cat in those photos. You can tell from the rest of his body language.

Is it just a brief random stretch? She isn’t scared by a noise or something, play fighting/hunting or looking for attention or being inquisitive, like the photos? It could be a sign of pain in her hips or front paws. Is she scratching or licking at a particular spot? What is her body language like when she does it? I believe Siamese cats are prone to hip issues. More likely it’s just a new cute trick but the weeing issues with a new behaviour could be a sign of something going on.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses adorable

Thanks @KnickerFolder it's a random stretch but often after a nap and thinking about it she has had a bit of limping, but it isn't consistent so I hadn't done anything about it

She looks uncomfortable when she does it

I'll.monitor for a day of 2 and maybe see the vet

@KnickerFolder that's really interesting! In our case it's definitely about getting attention, and he's a very happy little lad who just loves cuddles (and snacks).
