Insurance with FIV and other pre existing conditions

Has anyone got experience in adopting a cat with FIV or disability? I'm interested in how it worked with insurance - can you get cover? Rough cost? Do any organisations support if you have adopted through them for ongoing medical check ups or treatment?

We adopted a cat with FIV but he’s not insured as was too costly and they wouldn’t cover for pre existing conditions. I pay for a monthly health plan at the vets.

Same! Two with FIV and would have been insane amounts to insure them. In 4 years, the only serious vet bill we had was when decided to stop weeing as a stress reaction to moving house... £350 on OOO vets and a massive dose of gabapentin to calm him down... nothing to do with the FIV.

We have the funds that could cover any medical bills and a 0% credit card for emergencies. But we would have spent 100s on insurance by now and not used it at all.

We have insurance for Elton thank God as he's proved very costly! We went with Many Pets who accept FIV as a pre-existing condition. The premiums aren't cheap (£50/month) but it covers all his CKD treatment and Solensia injections etc.

Sorry just to answer your additional questions. He hasn't needed any additional support for the FIV specifically but the CKD (which is probably linked to his FIV status) requires quite a bit of monitoring/medication etc

Puppylucky* *have Manypets paid out ok? I feel a lot of insurers would just blame everything on the FIV. My cat at the minute has dental issues which is down to the FIV.

Puppylucky · 23/01/2025 22:14

Yes they're pretty good. My policy doesn't cover dental so we got hit for that, but he has regular medication and blood tests for CKD and Solensia for joint pain and they cover all of that. Because they accept pre-existing conditions it doesn't matter if it's linked to FIV.
