Cat won't wee in his tray!

My cat has (for the last 3 months) stopped weeing in his litter tray. He has 2 and still poos in one, but wees next to the other one. I can't think what has set this off! Now we have a puppy pad under the tray which stops the puddles but isn't very environmentally friendly. He's been checked over at the vet and she said it's behavioral 😞

So far I've tried:
4 types of litter (it has cost me a fortune!)
Clean compost
Moving the trays (he just wees where they used to be)
Putting a puppy pad in the tray (he still wees on the floor)

Help!!

Has anything changed in your household? A new arrival, or a child leaving for uni?

Does he have access to the outside?

Nothing changed, no new people or pets. He's blind in one eye and has cataracts in the other so he's a house cat, he could go out if I'm in to let him in/out but he doesn't like the cold and wet!

Is he up to date with worming? Have you tried a feliway?

Has the vet actually taken a urine sample and done any blood tests?

Did it all start at around the time you put the Christmas tree up? This happened with our cat (two year in a row) and when the vet looked at her computer system she said it had kicked off on the same day each early December. It's not unusual apparently and Christmas trees stress cats out (nothing to do with wether they are real or not, just large unusual objects looming all of a sudden that weren't there before, often blocking access to a window sill or comfy spot)

Anyway, I'd maybe try a feliway. We also have just the one massive litter tray for him now (I think it's called an XL jumbo from pets at home)

He has been completely checked by the vet, urine samples collected from an upside down puppy pad (quite impressed with myself for that)

I haven't tried a feliway so I'll get one of those.

He had a cat sitter in August and I'm wondering if she wasn't quite as thorough as us in cleaning his litter and so he's taken against it and it's much easier to wee on a nice clean floor tile/puppy pad.

He is still quite happy to poo in the litter tray (thank goodness)
