Crying when left

I've had cats before but not for years. We just welcomed this little cutie into our home and we're all smitten! We're doing slow and gradual introductions to our dog who wants to play (she is terrified of him) so her access is limited to the dog-free upstairs for now. She is very happy, purring, rubbing and wanting belly rubs when we're in the same room but as soon as we leave the room she cries (even if it's just a minute). Is this normal?
And if anyone has any tips for introducing them I'd be grateful. I had plenty of ideas but it relies on them being in the same room and the dog isn't allowed upstairs and the cat would just fly if he got anywhere near.

How old? If a kitten they can be very needy and we got ours a friend after the first week of non stop neediness! That resolved that issue.
I'd go cold turkey with the dog. I tried the gently gently approach with the result they never really got on. This time we had the kittens in their carrier for initial meeting but then just let them get on with it - the cats love the dog, the dog tolerates the cats.

You might try crate introductions, where one is in the crate and the other can roam around so they get used to each other? You don't say what the dog is though, not just size but breed can make things more or less safe for a kitten/

How old is the cat?

We've introduced three cats/kittens to our beagle and only ever separated when we weren't around to supervise. Never had any problems and we now leave them all unattended quite happily.

Best thing to keep a kitten entertained and company is.....another kitten. Could you find your wee one a pal?

Get another kitten, they will play together, entertain each other and when you go on days out/holidays they’ve got company
