I am trying to encourage the Pampered Princess Penelope to drink more. I had a catit Pixie, which I loathed. And I never saw her use. So any other recommendations?

Madam's favourite place to drink from is an old litter tray in the garden that's full of water 🙄

DBro and I have this for our respective cats

Attractive, adjustable, straighforward to maintain. DB's cats are getting on a bit and need to be encouraged to drink more. Mine had lost interest in theirs so I've put it away for a few weeks. Here's Izzy getting acquainted with it when I first set it up.

@Anniegetyourgun I am thinking about getting the mini one. One of the reviews says it gets condensation underneath? Has that been an issue?

Ooh sorry, didn't see your question, I haven't been on for a couple of days. I can't say I noticed a problem, really. Mine sits (when we're using it) on a (faux!) marble fireplace and I probably wouldn't even know if there was a bit of damp. What's the big issue with condensation anyway? I expect the odd splash would happen when a cat is using the fountain. One mops up innit.

We’ve got a cheap one from TikTok, little blue cube, it’s so quiet! Dcat loves it (and like yours used to drink from manky puddles or tubs that had filled up with rainwater in the garden)
We also have a catit (the one with the daisy) and other Dcat will drink from that but only if the fountain function is turned off

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2025 14:07

@Anniegetyourgun I've ordered that one. She'll probably ignore it. Her expression tells me she probably will

Why did you hate the Catit?

My boy loves his. The older girl loves a running tap in the bathroom, and will sit there all alone in the dark waiting for someone to come and turn it on! The younger girl has a bowl and access to the Catit which I don't see her use that often tbh.

May I recommend a rancid bucket in the garden? They seem to enjoy it most when full of decaying leaves.

Maybe that’s just my cats…

Toddlerteaplease · 15/01/2025 10:38

Pen's favourite drinking vessel is an old litter tray full of water that's been in the garden for ages. Not seen her near the fountain.

@Canthave2manycats it was fiddly and got green algae all over it.

We have the cordless Petlibro dockstream: https://uk.petlibro.com/products/dockstream-battery-operated-water-fountain

Big fan of this because once you charge it up, you can pop anywhere, doesn't need to be by a plug socket or have annoying cables. Motion sensor to activate, the water is pretty much silent until you're getting close to empty, and it's very easy to clean. I bought it on sale via Amazon for about £60 I think.

Thanks Tea, I make my kids do that rofl!

minipie · 15/01/2025 22:52

We have a cat fountain, Dcat ignores it even more than she ignores her regular water bowl.

The only thing she really likes drinks from is my evening mug of hot water (once it’s gone cold), obviously I stop drinking from it after this…

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2025 08:49

@catswithbowties it was a toss up between that one and the ceramic one I actually bought.

We’ve never had this issue with ours. Did you change the water and filter?

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2025 09:32

Yes. Frequently. I never had an issue with my previous fountain. The bowl warped In the end so it didn't fit together any more.

I am extremely unconcerned about my cat’s water intake. Cats are not big drinkers (they’re desert animals after all) and have evolved to get most of their fluid needs from the water content of the animals they eat. If your cat is fed on wet food, it doesn’t need to drink much at all. I leave water out for my cat but I don’t think he’s ever drank any of it, although on one or two occasions he’s had a quick drink out of the toilet bowl! Cats will obviously need water if they’re fed exclusively on dry food but I’ve always given mine the wet stuff. Standard wet cat food has a water content of about 80%, about the same proportion of water that’s in the mice that your cat would have ate in the wild. Personally, I think all these devices to get cats to drink more are a bit of a scam.

Soubriquet · 16/01/2025 12:30

I am tempted by a fountain cos I think they look cool but I see Toots drinking all the time from her ceramic water bowl so probably don’t need one. Plus they are expensive as hell!

Our Maine Coon/Ragdoll boy isn't interested in wet food. He loves his Scrumbles dry food and he drinks from his Catit fountain regularly and noisily.

I persist in giving him wet food but he is not a fan.

All cats are not the same.

Male cats in particular need to drink enough to avoid urinary issues.
