Cat insurance help

Adopted 3 cats and now need to sort their insurance. I've got them the healthcare plan for vaccinations, treatments and the like, that's £18 per month.

But if course this doesn't cover insurance. Quote are coming back at £25 per month 🤨

Please share your advice so pet insurance which isn't going to cost the earth.

TIA

£25 per cat?
Depends on the value of cover and type of cover e.g. is it a lifetime policy

I'm with ManyPets and have £15k lifetime cover for £55 for both combined. Probably a bit more expensive now they are 8 years old

Catmummyagain · 04/01/2025 12:02

I should add they are not neutered yet, could this be driving up the quotes? Am I better off leaving insuring them after they are neutered? Obviously they will not be leaving the house until that point.

Thanks, yes £25 per cat (Petplan).

They are regular moggies I've adopted, a mum and 2 kittens. They need bog standard cover but I am confused the different types of cover... what do people usually go for?

Try doing the quote saying they are neutered and see if it makes a difference (probably not tbh)
What age are they?
Male cats are more expensive to insure i think

dementedpixie · 04/01/2025 12:06

Petplan was extortionate compared to others when I looked so i chose Tesco the 1st year and then moved to ManyPets after that when my renewal price jumped with tesco

dementedpixie · 04/01/2025 12:09

With standard policies if you claim then that issue isn't covered again when you renew.

With lifetime cover you retain cover even if you claim as long as you maintain your monthly payments

Catmummyagain · 04/01/2025 12:23

Thank you @dementedpixie I will have a read.

The kittens are around 14 weeks, the mum cat is just over 1 years old. They are lovely and happy to give them their forever home but they are costing me a lot!

You can also do a price comparison on there too

I'm afraid insurance just is expensive at the moment. Vet costs have gone up so insurance is expensive. Petplan might be dearer than others and perhaps as your cats are younger you aren't so worried about cover? Although if they are indoors/outdoors there is always risk of injury or fighting.

Our old boy cost us more than the car to insure by the end (around 55 a month!) but he also needed monthly injections that cost us £150 for his arthritis and by the end he needed ultrasounds and other bits so we were glad he was insured.

£25 per month per cat seems expensive. I paid £130 for the year per cat for Lifetime Gold Insurance with The Insurance Emporium, I think I used Compare The Market or similar to decide who to go with and didn’t go with the cheapest. As well as medical care the cover includes things like reward money if they go missing, cattery if I go into hospital etc. I insured the kittens as soon as I got them so before being vaccinated or neutered. I’d look on a comparison website to find the best deal for the cover you want.

I’d also check reviews on trust pilot for any company you’re considering. I’m a big advocate for petplan. Mine are all insured with them, and yes, they are quite pricey compared to many others-but all vet surgeries work with pet plan, so if you have a big bill you never pay anything other than the excess-which is usually about £80.
I have also had to claim many many times, for many different things, and never had a single issue. They pay out immediately, no questions asked.
There are other, cheaper policies which are just as reliable, but I have zero experience with them.
Always check reviews, don’t take out a policy from one persons recommendation on here.
Until someone has had to make multiple different claims, they actually don’t know how decent their insurers are

ManyPets paid out promptly when I claimed for one of my cats and the claim was all done online

Toddlerteaplease · 04/01/2025 15:16

I've always been with Tesco. They've paid out £28k over the years. (My cats are trouble!) my premiums were £137 a month at one point.

When I had two cats, I only had one on the vet plan as they shared flea and wormer. The other had a savings account and I put money into that Instead. As they are all indoor cats. I'm a bit lax with training them for fleas.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/01/2025 15:17

When o had a two year old boy, with no claims. I was surprised that he cost more to insure than my 4 year old who had 2 claims.

You can be lax when they’re indoor. You just spot treat as needed. Mine have been strictly indoor for the last 6 years-I’ve only needed to treat them if I’ve been to someone else’s house who had fleas (which was only twice) so that was just preventative.

Prior to the last 6 years, my cats were always outdoor-so going on 40 years-but in that time we only ever had a flea problem on 5 separate occasions-and I was so lax with the flea treatments that I literally only did it if they caught fleas 🤣

Sounds about right for Pet Plan. Is it the £7000 a year? I pay around £30 for a 5 year old moggie. I opted for the £7000 plan because I had a cat (Troy) who was on the £4000 plan and he developed hypertropic cardiomyopathy and he was nearly up to the limit before he sadly died. Petplan used to do a slight reduction for 2 cats.
