Which flea medicine?

My cat has been on Bravecto for over a year since fleas became a problem in the house (was just using a regular store spot-on before). We’ve had very little complaint at least in how she tolerates it. I was also looking after my mums cat for a time while she was in between homes, and her cat was on Bravecto too. She was larger so had the much larger dose. During the time we were battling fleas, my mum’s cat seemed better protected (and seemingly was doing a better job in helping us keep the fleas at bay), I wonder if in part due to the dose.

My mum has since taken her cat back, and am noticing an increase in fleas and bites again. So we’re back to hoovering, spraying, washing everything etc and I’m exhausted!! Wondering if the Bravecto isn’t as effective on my cat? Or if the fleas have become immune to it? It’s baffling as I read it’s one of the best.

Anyway, is there another flea medication anyone can recommend that hasn’t let you down in protecting your cat? I’ll be taking her to the vet soon for a check up and a repeat prescription so now would be the time for me to request another! Thanks

Are the fleas not just in your house and you see them on the cat because they jump on for a feed . Maybe you should move the cat out for a few days and fumigate the place properly . Our Siamese , who go out in a catio , have the Program injection , which doesn’t stop them getting fleas but sterilises any that bite so they can’t breed in the house . That said they’ve never had fleas .

I mean yes, likely still in the house (even though we had new carpets and flooring installed not long ago!) but she’s an indoor cat now so it’s got to be, and I can’t see how there could be an increase if the Bravecto was doing its job? As I said, I’m baffled!

OP, you need to regularly deflea your whole house, aswell as the cat.
Indorex, available on Amazon - spray every room in the house twice a year, to interrupt the life cycle of the flea.

LNEAX · 03/01/2025 17:38

Yes indorex is what we use! But after just a few days, the bites start up again..

Is it possible that it could be a bed bugs infestation, rather than fleas?

Movinginthesunlight · 03/01/2025 17:43

Our cat came to us with fleas. After trying loads of things the only things that worked were:

Johnsons flea tablets - in a pink box from amazon
Indorex spraying everything everywhere and hoovering multiple times a week. Sofas everywhere the cats sleep.
A LOT of flea combing every night
Washing blankets etc on 60 degrees wash very often

No we had pest control confirm just fleas a year ago when this started. And definitely caught a flea in my new candle a few days ago!

I have read others say Bravecto wasn’t as effective for them anymore, am really just looking for any other prescriptions that work for them!

Indorex the bejasus out of the house. It takes a few weeks for all the eggs (which are effectively unkillable) to hatch into larvae which the Indorex will kill.

Get the cat weighed to check the Bravecto dose. Since your mum's cat has gone home, the adult fleas only have one poisoned chalice to sup from instead of two, but they still have delicious unadulterated human blood to drink, therefore relatively more chance of getting the clean blood meal that they need to produce eggs.
I do not tecommend confining the cat to one room- once treated, let the sweet furry little flea death trap loose round the house to lure the bastards in.

powershowerforanhour · 03/01/2025 17:54

Is she 100% indoor only? As is, doesn't set foot outside the house at all?
I had a client really struggling, turns out the cat used to go just outside the south facing door to sun itself for about half an hour each day, lying on a mat by the door, then come in. One day she saw a neighbourhood cat come and lie in the prewarmed spot when her cat came in. She threw the mat away- problem solved.

Another client had his mobility scooter parked just outside the door. One of his cats used to walk the few feet from the door to climb into the scooter as the sun warmed it. Indorexed the scooter as well as the house, problem solved.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Will keep up the hoovering, hot washing and spraying!

Yes she’s 100% indoors. Wonder if there’s one small part of the house I’ve not tackled but even that’s unlikely how ham I’ve been going! Agreed, was better when we had two of them to help!

Keep going back to the effectiveness of Bravecto too though, I was spurred on to write this post when, after spending some time stroking my cat, I came away with a bite on my finger. Unless they’re biting me because they can’t bite her! Just at my wits end :(

Speak to the vet about Program , at least the cycle would end eventually if you neuter the buggers that are biting her now .

StrawberryPavlova · 03/01/2025 18:09

I use Advantage on my two, can buy it without a prescription from the Animed Direct website. Not sure what the active ingredient is compared to Bravecto but I've been using it for years now and it still seems to be perfectly effective (and my two cats go outside).

WhatMe123 · 03/01/2025 18:13

The flea cycle is complex. Google or, they're cleaner things. The eggs lay dormant and detect warmth and movement so can be in your rug and if you sit down it'll hatch and wait. You can't just flea and hoover once and thinknits enough. You need to hoover every day, all along the skirting. Door frames literally everywhere. Remove as much fabric as possible. Change hoover bags regularly. You can beat fleas big it's hard work. Good luck

dementedpixie · 03/01/2025 18:14

I was using stronghold plus and now my cats get nexguard combo. They haven't had fleas. Both were vet prescribed

LNEAX · 03/01/2025 20:09

Thanks will ask about these!
