What are your clumping litter recommendations?

We’ve had our kitten for a few months but can’t find a clumping litter that works well for us yet (he doesn’t seem to mind any of them!)
We’ve had traditional clumping ones but they just go to sticky clay and now we’re using a natural wheat based one but it smells weird and seems to get everywhere outside of the tray.
What are your top recommendations to save my continued trial and error purchases! Thank you 🐈‍⬛ 🐾

Catsan ultra works brilliantly with our cat. I do find it expensive but it’s what Battersea recommended when we got her and have had no issues with odour or sticky clay!

Sanict fragrance free clumping litter, very happy with it.

stormsandsunshine · 02/01/2025 23:13

Greenwoods.
But you do need a litter mat as the grains are small and light.

Ever Clean ultra clumping. Expensive but lasts for ages it clumps so well. Usually on offer at Pets at Home or Amazon.

HPandthelastwish · 02/01/2025 23:46

The Morrisons one works for my cats, the odour control one which is quite fine. DCat is happy to use it multiple times as long as it is cleared up and topped up to her preferred level.

Before that I used Catsan but DCat refused to use it once it had been soiled even if it if had been cleared which cost me a fortune on litter.

I used to use worlds best but swapped to Amazon own brand and happy with it

I tried loads and found this to be the best. You can buy in BM

Thank you - we’ll give some of them a go. It sounds like it’s the holy grail to find the right one!

You shouldn’t really use clumping litter with a kitten. We use Sanicat 7day freshness, it’s brilliant I can’t fault it. It’s not clumping but really does last the 7 days.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/01/2025 10:20

I use the Pets at Home clumping sawdust one - no odour, clumps well, a big bag lasts for ages. Downside is that even with a mat is does get tracked around a bit.

VANCAT. It seems expensive at first glance but you never have to do a full tray empty out and change, just keep scooping and topping. I got a big stainless steel litter tray (doesn't absorb smells like plastic trays do) and the vancat litter. You fill a deep layer of the litter so the wee never hits the bottom of the tray and just scoop out the clumps. They often have offer codes too and it lasts really well once you've done the first full tray. Clumps really well and doesn't stink.

I know I sound like an advert bot but i'm not, just an enthusiastic customer who tried lots of others before finding this one.

I always bought clay-based because it's what Dcat had used before we got her. Supermarket own if we needed more between delivery.

We switched to Scoop (from Katkin, where we get her food delivered from). Made from recycled materials, but not paper, and clumps nicely.

Dcat really likes it, it doesn't get all over my floor like all previous litters, it doesn't smell - and the bags are light. This is important for me, as I'm disabled.

He’s 6 months old - does that still count as a kitten or young cat? We’ve never seen him eating the litter

I'm also using the KatKin Scoop Planet clumping one. It's expensive but does last and is easy to remove the clumped wees & poos. Tempcat digs all the way to the bottom no matter how deep I make it so it still sticks a bit to the bottom of the tray but is much easier to pry off than clay based ones like CatSan. Smells a bit like popcorn (it's made from pea fibre & millet).

I think it's not recommended to use clumping ones with kittens in case they eat it and it swells in their stomachs so might be better to use non clumping for a while longer.

Potentialmadcatlady · 03/01/2025 11:47

I use world’s best clumping. I usually get the picky cat one but the others work just the same. It works particularly well with top loader trays ( easy for a six month old). It’s expensive but lasts for ages if you scoop twice a day. I have nine cats and they all use it and my litter costs and waste have halved since getting it.

Everything I read said that it was fine to switch at 4 or 5 months so I switched then. Our kittens never ate the litter anyway. Clumping litter is a game changer.

Favouritefruits · 03/01/2025 19:15

@LavenderLxx they say clumping shouldn’t be used under 1 but if yours doesn’t eat it then can’t see it’s a problem

WhereAreWeNow · 03/01/2025 19:22

We've tried lots and found Sanicat to be the best.
