Bloody cat 😭

Had to take my dog for a walk at 2am as she was v unsettled and my wee cat came with us.
We have a green area where I go and he ran on ahead and somehow managed to pick up a little robyn and ran away with it.
I chased him as much as I could but didn't want to shout and wake all my neighbours. By that time I caught up with him the poor bird was dead having been tossed about a few times.
Just felt so sad and annoyed with my cat.

I read in the Terry Pratchett book "The Unadulterated Cat" that you might as well be angry with them for wearing Real Fur Coats !

Cats do these things , your cat saw prey . They don't care if it's a baby robin, a mouse , a magpie .

My cats are thankfully not good hunters (even though they were born feral , I think their Mum and the lovely person who fed them took care of the food) .
I'd be grateful the bird is dead and he hasn;t left it half dead somewhere .

He's still your cat , they just have that side to their nature which is who they are .

Well he’s a cat he’s following his instincts. I don’t like it either but they are predators.

Santa brought Christmas pjs for me and the kids last night, but not for DH because he didn't want any. His cat, who hates everyone except him, watched this unfold, then got up, went outside and brought a mouse in, walked past us downstairs and took it upstairs to where he was.

I was very grateful it was dead.

Sorry, Robyn should have been spelt Robin!

I know it's natural for cats to do these things but it's horrible 😢

Was woken up this Christmas morning by DH shouting at 'the fucking cat'.

Cat had decided to announce it was breakfast time by jumping on the bed and landing, claws out, on his eyelids.

This would be bad for most people, but DH is paranoid about his eyes, having lost a lot of his vision.

Thankfully for the cat she is cute and very silky so when he stopped swearing, he got up and fed her tuna.

My cat rarely catches anything (like less than once a year), but I've been gutted if I'm not able to save the victim in time.

The others, you wonder if its a slower and more horrible death to have freed them. Was it kinder for, as my cat does, them to be dispatched quickly? She doesn't play with them half dead for hours, it's more like she's so delighted to have caught anything at all that she just finishes the job and takes the win!

Cat is a total softy but once in a blue moon she's like a thing possessed and doesn't resemble the girl I know!

To be fair to the cat, if it was 2am, the robin was probably on the ground unwell. Robins should be asleep in a secluded bush or tree at that time. Easy prey.

I’ve had my first present, from the cat!

A little puddle of sick.
Hooray.

If it makes you feel any better, robins are incredibly aggressive birds who will kill any robin rivals who come anywhere near their area.

There was a study once where they put model robins into another robin's territory one by one over time. As the resident robin killed each one, the next one would have slightly less "robin" e.g. remove the tail, then the head. The resident robin would continue to attack every new toy robin until it was just attacking a red breast, the only part of the interloper remaining. below is a quote from the Irish Times

Its public image is one of a tame, friendly bird, when in reality, it is one of the most aggressive birds you could meet! If you’re another robin that is. Robins are fiercely territorial throughout the year and will not tolerate another robin entering their patch of turf. And it’s not just the males. Females also defend a territory through autumn and winter. Unlike other bird species, both the males and females have red breast feathers, making them difficult to tell apart.
Zoologists studying its behaviour revealed that a robin will attack anything that remotely resembles another robin in its territory — basically anything displaying a red patch — including stuffed birds (and even headless stuffed birds!), soft toys, or their own reflection in a window, car mirror or windscreen. They will also attack a tuft of red feather. Robins will even fight to the death if necessary.

Ours did this too, and he's not a frequent puker. Merry Christmas indeed 😅

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/12/2024 12:17

Think of it as the bird may have been injured or unwelll if it was on the ground and the cat euthanised it ?

Our old cat was a hunter , we found dead mice (by the toaster ) or bits of sparrow .(she ate them , maybe the roughage of feathers )
She was well fed (as are my current cats ) but she'd had kittens before we got her so maybe she had more urge to hunt ?

CheeseyOnionPie · 25/12/2024 12:22

Cats gonna cat

hoarahloux · 25/12/2024 21:03

Well, that's what happens when cats are allowed to roam. That's the choice you've made. Other choices were available to you.

BurntBroccoli · 25/12/2024 23:46

I'm very late to cat loving having never owned or even met one properly. In fact, I hated all cats and would hang foil and old CDs around my garden.

One day. Alan the cat came into my life and never left.

I now love Alan and basically all cats.

Alan has killed things and I hate it. I don't hate Alan.

Bloody cat 😭

One of mine left me a dirty protest on the kitchen floor because we had the gall to be out visiting family all day and not on hand to cater to Her Highness' every whim. Little shite.

Alan looks like he'd kill you in your sleep if you harboured dark thoughts about him.

He's a lovely boy and great name Grin.
