Kitten- worried younger than 8 weeks stated

We have just bought a ragdoll kitten that is supposedly 8 weeks old. I stupidly sent my husband to get him and he's tiny. He weighs 425grams. He eats and drinks on his own and uses litter tray independently. He plays but not as much as expected.
We have other cats and I'm now worried he won't get his jabs tomorrow as planned and we can't mix them. Meaning he won't be well socialised in the crucial weeks 😭 he's super confident with people including my children. I don't know what to do. The breeders seemed lovely, are adamant he is 8 weeks and sent us through photos dated on phone and shown us the flea and worming treatment he is on and dates of when he had it last.
I just don't know what to believe. He's beautiful but I'm worried. I can't risk my others getting anything and worry they aren't trustworthy. However I am aware all my cats go outside so could in theory also have FIV/felv etc unbeknown to us as that's the risk of them going outside.
I'm just not sure what to do? Ask for a snap felv/fiv test? Quarantine for longer or less to help him socialise. 😭

Hope your kitten is OK - but surely 'kitten available just in time for Christmas' should have sounded a klaxon warning?
Also curious where is he getting planned injections on Christmas day?

Scampuss · 24/12/2024 11:00

Even 8 weeks is too young really, ideally they should be 12-13 weeks when they leave the litter.

Are you sure he's even a pedigree?

HomelyK · 24/12/2024 12:18

Hey everyone, saw both parents papers (mum is registered non active hence he's not registered). I think I was naive. He's been to the vets and said he's about 7 weeks but perfectly healthy and as our cats are all vaccinated we should start introductions so he can learn from them.

He's doing really well he's just so small bless him. My son and I are sleeping in his playroom with him and he snuggles right in.

Lesson learned go for one with tica papers etc if there is ever a next time- I just couldn't fathom £1200 on a cat but maybe that's the price needed.

If there’s ever a next time, I’d go for a rescue.

Yup.

8 weeks is too young for a kitten to be separated from its mother. They are awful breeders.

HomelyK · 24/12/2024 12:45

Firstly the judgement isn't helpful really. Secondly I have two young children whom are perfect with our pets but all local rescues point blank refuse at present to give us a cat because of this. I had rescues as a kid and tried at 4 local rescues all denied. But thanks for the helpful advice 😬

I mean anyone selling kittens right before Christmas is dodgy as fuck. And anyone bringing a baby animal into their home right before Christmas is just plain thick.. You might be lucky and have no health issues going forward.

PortiasBiscuit · 24/12/2024 12:46

Our Ragdoll is not very active at all, the not playing could just be the breed. Great for cuddles though.

You know nothing about the OP, don’t be so bloody rude!

Try not to worry. It's done now. If he is eating, drinking etc by himself should be ok.
Get a vet check booked in asap
and see what the vet says.

HomelyK · 24/12/2024 12:50

Thanks @PortiasBiscuit. I have posted on Mumsnet before and always been met with helpful advice but clearly Xmas eve is not sparking much kindness and joy! That's great to know it may just be his breed ❤️

Good luck with him @HomelyK , make sure you have very good insurance , my mum had a Ragdoll ( very good pedigree and papers) and he cost an absolute fortune in vets bills , special food for his medical issues etc . He was the cat equivalent of a money pit .

Mwnci123 · 24/12/2024 12:52

@HomelyK The only Ragdoll cat I know is gentle but doesn't do much.

He went today. They have checked him over and says he is healthy. He may be a small 8 weeker but his coat and teeth indicate more likely 7 weeks as not fully grown. All other health checks were great, no fleas, earmites etc and stools are normal ❤️ They said he's clearly well socialised as snuggled up and purred when the vet nurse picked him up and was playful. So hopefully it will all turn out ok.

My son got his Siamese at 10 weeks and they were teeny tiny , they’ve just had their 3rd birthday and the boy is over 5kg and the girl is over 4 kg .

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/12/2024 12:58

To be fair - for decades it's been universally recommended not to bring pets into a house at Christmas. Remember the 'a dog is for life' campaign from the 1970s? Many rescues won't rehome in December for that reason.
Clearly OP I hope all goes well with your new kitten, but you might wish to reflect on some of the comments received here for future reference - particularly in encouraging dodgy breeders. The following quote from the Cats Protection website is apposite.
Kittens should remain with their mother until they are at least eight weeks old. Kittens separated before this are at greater risk of becoming sick and developing life-threatening illnesses.

Still waiting for a photo BTW.

Scutterbug · 24/12/2024 12:58

We need a picture!

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 24/12/2024 12:59

Hope your kitten settles in and is soon ruling the roost!

Unfortunately your first warning was ‘mum is registered non active’. In other words, owners bought a kitten under the agreement not to breed from her. And did anyway. I doubt the father is full pedigree ragdoll as most owners of active males won’t mate outside the active register. If he is, he is also owned by unscrupulous people.

The second sign was letting kittens go so young. I know most moggies will leave about eight weeks but the advice for pedigrees is 12.

Without the pedigree, you’ve got a pretty moggie. No judgement as I have owned lots of gorgeous moggies over the years! But you paid cheap because you have no guarantee of what he is.

And finally - you posted without paying the kitten tax so come on, let’s see him!!

(edit as I used she not he)

Newuser75 · 27/12/2024 16:08

@HomelyK so glad all went well at vets. Now you can relax and enjoy your kitten!!
