Male kitten mounting female

Male kitten has started mounting female.
I pulled him off her tonight and could see his penis.
They are booked in for spay/castration on January 2nd.
Extremely unlikely they’ll be able to fit them in any earlier and I guess it’s only 10 days away.
Would they scan her to see if she’s pregnant? Will they be happy to go ahead with spaying if she’s already pregnant?

The vet suggested this time to get them done (they are around 4.5 months old)

At 1 year a cat is the equivalent to a 16 year old. You might want them to keep them separate.

Scampuss · 21/12/2024 00:24

i doubt you'll get him in any sooner than he's already booked but you must keep them apart in the meantime. Being mated is a horrible experience for female cats so please don't put her through it, even with spay and abort as an option.

BibbityBobbityToo · 21/12/2024 01:05

Mine were doing that, vet said not to worry as males practice mounting fairly early on, earlier than they reach sexual maturity. Your female kitten won't be fertile until around 6 months.

Even neutered males can show off their little pink worm, especially when Great Aunt Betty rubs their belly 😳, so don't take much notice of that.

Our vet told me that female kittens can have their first heat from 4 months so I’d keep them separate if I were you. He’s probably just practising but I wouldn’t take the risk.

They need to be kept separate until one of them can be spayed or neutered. She could very easily get pregnant.

Yes the vet can spay and abort at the same time, assuming the cat isn't TOO far along in pregnancy.

At 4.5 months unfortunately both will probably be fertile by now, but that doesn't mean to say he was definitely mating with her. Mounting can often be a domination thing - I can remember my neutered, insanely thick, Boycat once trying to "mount" his sister once with a very confused look on his face. Not only because there was no question about who was the dominant cat (sister), but he was aiming at her ribs! She just lay there with a resigned look on her face, you could almost hear her sigh at him (she was very patient with his thickness). Plenty of dogs, even neutered dogs, will try to mount people's legs as well.

Another thing to consider is that he may have just been trying it on, with her not currently on heat. Certainly in adult cats (not sure about kittens) the behaviour can change quite dramatically when a queen comes in heat - yelling, trying to escape, tail up & reversing into things, ultra affection with abandonment etc.

I'd guess that if this is the first time, or at least one of the earliest, then even if she IS pregnant she should be comfortably early enough for a spay/abort at the beginning of next month.

We had this happen to us, it was way earlier than the vet had told us to bring them in for neutering. I phoned the vet and the initial comment was 'he's a bit young but bring him in'. As soon as they examined him him it was 'oh yes - he is ready to be neutered'. So they were both done within days. Definitely keep them apart until you can get them done

My male kitten attempted to mount his sister a lot at this stage. He was, however, way off the mark at copulating since he was quite a bit smaller. She was also decidedly nonplussed by the experience. I had her neutered early but held off having him done till his wee started to smell of tomcat at around 8 months old (he was an indoor only cat at that stage and the vet had suggested allowing him to reach this stage to have grown a larger penis to make any catheterisation in the future slightly easier).

If you are concerned, can you keep them apart?

You need a new vet Confused

My rescue kitten was the father of kittens by his sister. He and the kittens were in foster together - he was an amazing dad to them given he was so young himself, but I think he was relieved to be free of the responsibility once I took him home. The kittens were waiting to go to their new home together and mum had already been adopted, so a happy ending in this case.

I would hurry up the neuter, OP - maybe just get him castrated as it's a more straightforward procedure and then she can be spayed in Jan as planned.

MrsHoolie · 21/12/2024 18:09

Thankyou all.
The procedure is in 10 days and I’d be suprised if the vet could fit either of them in before that.

The female is the runt so she’s smaller than him,not that that will make a difference for the sexual maturity.

The vet suggested this date as they should be 2kg by then.

Normal behaviour in my limited experience of having kitten siblings, even if she were to get pregnant which is unlikely the surgery would just take the womb and pregnancy away at the time of the op.

Squeekey · 21/12/2024 20:12

I'd phone up and explain, also phone round some other vets to see if he can be fitted in. Until then, keep them apart. Whether she is fertile or not, you don't really want him to shag his sister, and to potentially allow kittens to be conceived with the plan of them being aborted seems a bit cruel IMO.

I would ring round and try and find another vet - if that's not possible they really should be kept separate. Cat sex is painful and incredibly unpleasant - you really don't want to put a tiny kitten through it if at all possible.
