Cat with UTI that keeps coming back

Dcat is 3 years old and never had this issue before. End of November she started peeing all over the house and I could tell there was blood in it.
Took her to the vet who initially diagnosed cystitis and gave her 2 injections and sent me off with metacam. Was told to stop the metacam if she was sick, which she was after the first dose. I called the vets and they said she should be fine with just the injections she'd had so to just keep an eye on her.
7 days later, she was back peeing round the house with blood in it. Went back to the vet, this time they asked me to get a urine sample so they could test it. Did that, she was then diagnosed with crystals but no blockages. Prescribed with Synulox and more metacam, with the vet this time saying to give it in a different way (originally was with food, this time told to give it orally an hour after food). All good, medicine done as prescribed for 7 days. The last few days I have been giving her nutracys twice a day in her food, again as prescribed.
We are 7 days post the last dose of medicine and she is peeing blood round the house again. I will call the vet again tomorrow but has anyone had this and can offer advice / reassurance? Anything I can do at home to try and stop the reoccurance?

With our boy we had to spend hundreds on feliway and only feed wet food. We found standard Felix pouches better than the prescription diets.

It's not a UTI it's Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. There isn't any infection there.

Some cats show stress, even to the point of peeing blood, through their bladders.

It takes a whole programme of support: multiple litter trays, Feliway, Metacam, special urinary diet, wet food, increasing fluid intake, looking at anything that might be stressing her out, lots of interactive play...

Am on my 3rd cat with this now and we always have some emergency Metacam and Feliway in the house.

If she has crystals you need to change her diet permanently - she needs to be on a urinary food. We feed Purina for ours but there are different options depending on the type of crystals she has.

Ours also has Cystease and D-Mannose tablets everyday.

As biscuitsandbooks says, she needs to be on a special pet food permanently. My vet told me there are some that just prevent crystals forming, others that prevent them forming and also dissolve any that are there, and my cat needed the latter. As my cat only liked dry food she recommended Urinary S/O from Royal Canin's veterinary range (available online). He didn't get any further problems. Ask your vet what food they would recommend for yours.

Have they checked her kidneys? 3 seems really young to have problems.

Most cystitis in cats is stress related! (Vet) Is there anything that has changed in her dynamic thar could have set this off? New cat in the neighbourhood, work being done in the house, even a new sofa!
Feliway is a good place to start, there are also supplements (eg cystophan, you can buy online) that can help. I had a cat with FLUTD for years, moved to a house with a catflap and it stopped. It's a multifactorial complex issue, I'm afraid!

My male cat is the most chilled cat ever but he started in and out his tray
I had him at the vet within the hour, same meds as you were given

I decided to hit it hard as I've been there with cats with urine issues so I swapped him to Hills urinary food immediately and cystophan (loading dose then standard dose) every single day and he's been ok since fingers crossed

The Hills isn't cheap but I figured it was cheaper than another out of hours vet bill!

How do you give the D Mannose? Our cat has had this twice. She peed all over our bed.

I asked the vet what food she should be on
but he was useless. Just said feed wet food but I have a huge very expensive bag of premium dry food to get through. I also feed the cat on grain free food. I just don’t know what to do.

biscuitsandbooks · 21/12/2024 09:07

@AmazingGraze we just buy the tablets off Amazon and ours swallows them whole, but you can get a powder to put on their food or add to their water too I think!

Have a look at the ‘international cat care’ website - they are an amazing resource (I recognise there’s lots of bad information on the internet too so generally advice against just ‘googling it’) They have pages on feline lower urinary tract disease and feline idiopathic cystitis, which sound like what your cat is suffering from.

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2024 09:57

We use Vetpro Urinary capsules. It helps that the cat in question is food obsessed so we open them and sprinkle them on her food. However she is so dim that she has been known to just eat the capsule - I appreciate this is rare!

We wondered if they were a waste of money so stopped and the problem came right back.

Thank you everyone, you've all been very helpful.

I've got some Royal Canin wet and dry food for urinary health this morning so will start her on that. The vet recommended that or Hill's or Purina. I will look into the other things you suggest.

No real changes at home, although we have had a few workmen in recently for boiler issues. She doesn't like people.

Thank you all again ❤️
